We've been feeding a mangy stray and I don't want it to infect my dog or child (I've read it can spread from the cat). I know that the medicine used to treat cat mange, Ivermectin, is the same medicine used in HeartGard which is used to treat heartworms in dogs. So can I just give this medicine to the kitty? Any advice is appreciated.

DO NOT give dog Heartgard to a cat. Ivermectin needs to be injected to treat mange. You can also do sulphur dips. Talk to a vet.

Look this is a stray cat, it has not had a great diet, so before you go straight for the chemicals, which can only cause organ and other damage down the line, try giving it a more healthful diet. Once the cat is healthy again it won't have the mange. I do not like the idea of a 'quick fix' solution, it was not a 'quick fix' solution that got the animal in that state to start with. All the best, now what are you going to call it?

Get the RSPCA or some other organisation to try and catch the cat, but don't try and medicate the cat yourself- you could kill it by mistake.

Why don't you call a vet instead of asking these morons on here?
