You should get him a Honda or Toyota. Their cheap, reliable, easy to maintain, have great gas mileage and are cheap to fix as well. I would look in the Camry, Civic or Accord.

He should get the car himself. That's what our son had to do. If he wanted a car he had to pay for it. The first one was an old Ford Granada that he wrecked in a month. Then he borrowed his mother's car and immediately went through the plate glass window of a Moto Photo store. Up went his insurance to $2500 a year. Then he got another used one an old Chevy Cordoba he found that was being garaged by some even older guy. When that used a lot of gas he put that into storage and bought a Ford Escort for better gas mileage from his girlfriend's parents. Finally he figured out that the $140 a month he was spending for storage would buy a lot of gas, so he sold the Escort to his younger brother and is driving the Chevy Cordoba now. All this started when he was 17 and today he is 21. He has held down two jobs at the same time as being a full time student because he had to pay the insurance, gas, and repairs.
It's the best way for them to learn. If you give them a car and pay for everything they get no sense of value. If he wants it he has to work to get the money to pay for it. This might sound a little cruel but what you end up with is a self-sufficient kid who can stand on his own.

A car is only a pain in the butt if your son is going to live on campus. Everything he will need will be within walking distance, college parking is one of the biggest scams in the world. In a college town cars=damage & parking tickets= cars being towed, booted and if not DUI's. I'm not even sure that freshman are allowed to have a parking space on most campuses. Save the money that will be spent on payments, insurance & damage (it'll happen even if it's not his fault) and help him get one when it'll actually be useful. I can guarantee you that even if you live rather far away, somebody will live somewhere near you and drive him home for the holidays if he pays for half the gas.

Something economical and good on gas - maybe like a Honda Civic. I know a few people who have Civic's and they are very reliable, low maintenance, affordable, and gas friendly.

Public transportation is all over the place on a university and parking is probobly hell. A bike would do just fine. No gas, no insurance and no parking places, no oil changes, no transmission problems. ect...
