A situp goes all the way up while a crunch stops when the abs have been contracted.

From time to time I change my work out... Some people have a hard time believeing that I do as many as 3000 crunches a day.
Been doing this for over 20 yrs. (got the best six-pac in my neighborhood!)

During sit-ups, most people cheat and use their hip flexor muscles instead of their abdominals. The crunch is more effective at isolating the abdominal muscles if you keep your spine from arching.

No resistive exercise will help you "loose fat" anywhere. This is because fat and muscle are two completly different structures. You need to increase your heart rate to a moderate level and maintain that for about 45 minutes. This allows your body to use fat as it's source of energy rather than the sugar in your blood stream. So yes, running can potentially help you get a flat tummy; but realistically, the body will burn the fat from wherever it wants. It may be your abdomen, or it could be your rear-end, or your arms. It's a crap-shoot!

With Crunches, You barely lift your head from the floor.. with sit-ups, You go all the way from the floor until You touch Your knees... Crunches are much better for a flat stomach... but You need to do a lot of them , and use ONLY Your Stomach muscles to do the exercise... not your back.

crunches only work the lower rectus abdominus, while sit ups will work more ab muscles, but sit ups are also very hard on the low back... i would stick with doing crunches, if you twist your torso while coming up during a crunch you can work your internal and external obliques as well. cruches -- you just lift your shoulders off the ground and hold, keep stomach sucked in. sit up -- you sit up basically from laying position on the ground.

situps you sit all the way up
crunches your hands are beneath your head and you look up at the ceiling the whole time and you only lift off the ground about 3 inches.

Crunches work your upper abdominals and back whereas sit-ups work mid abs.

Any cardio exercise will help you lose fat all over your body if done for at least 30 consecutive mins , unfortunately we cannot choose where we lose it on our bodies.

regarding the running: anything that burns calories will eventally help you "get a flat tummy," because you will be losing weight, but you can't specifically tell your body where to store fat or where to lose it from

in crunches, you lift your shoulders, not all the way...in situps you lift your whole upper body, not just your shoulders, crunches are a better excercise for your abs :):):)
