I called a local restraunt and placed and order "To Go". I picked it up at the bar and did not tip. When I got home, my husband asked how much the bill was including tip. I asked "You would tip for take out?".. he said "I don't know?".

Question is....Should I have tipped the bartender?

No. If he didn't serve it to you like a waiter or drive it to your house like delivery, than no way. Would you tip the drive-thru person at Burger King? Same thing here.

No. It would have been nice but when you think about it it's not really a big deal. There's always a tip jar or something but that's very optional and I never tip. I only tip when I sit in the resteraunt/bar or when they deliver.

Good question - I always have donered this and am pretty inconsistent on what I do. Usually I leave 2 bucks or so. I think of it as if I buy a couple of beers at the bar, I leave a couple bucks tip.

If the bartender did anything more than picking up the order and handing it to you - like a fast food counter, no.

If he went and got you extra napkins, sauce, etc, then yes.

I would not tip unless they did something "special". I would not even tip the ppl who make coffee (as in starbucks) they are paid to do that. all other services such as parking your car, waiting tables, or anything else customary gets a tip.

yes i think you should have
not the regular amount of tips but i usually give them $1 or $2 since they put my foods in a box and made it ready to go.
if i order kinda complicated items , i would give them 15% of tips.

It is not customary to tip for "To Go" orders more than 5-10%. However, if you would like to tip the bartender, you are always welcome to do it. I personally do not tip, I over-tip. It's my philosophy. :)

I never tip for to-go food, and I don't think you should. Doesn't make any sense, since the person ringing up your food didn't actually DO anything for you.

Nah, I dont think it was necessary. I dont usually tip for take out, if I do, its only a very nominal amount, like $1.

I woudn't have if I went in to get it. I do tip a couple of bucks when they bring it out to the car.
