Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, and a few other languages are all based in Latin (they are called Romance languages because Rome is the place from where Latin spread)and are all fairly similar. As to your specific question, Portuguese is more closely related to Spanish than Italian. May God bless and keep you.

Portuguese is closer to Spanish, so much so that some linguists count them as the same language. Portuguese is NOT a mix of French and Italian.

Actually, the closest language to Portuguese is Galician, a language of northwestern Spain.

EDIT: Italian is NOT closer to Spanish than is Portuguese. Italian's closest relative is the extinct Dalmatian language and after that the Franco-Provencal languages of northern Italy and southeastern France. Besides Portuguese, Galician, and Catalan, the closest relative to Spanish is FRENCH, not Italian.

I think Spanish because when I was working at the Sydney Olympics my friend and I were working with the Brazilian athletes who hardly spoke a word of English and we didn't know Portuguese, but my friend was quite fluent in Spanish and was able to carry out a decent conversation with the Brazilians.

Well, I think that they are all in the same level of closeness. I mean, some days ago, I asked a question in Yahoo answers in Spanish and everybody over there understood it and answered in Italian.. which I was also able to understand. A month ago some firends came from Brazil speaking in Portuguese and we were able to understand... So, I think that those three are really well connected

Baby ioye!, Portuguese is closer to Spanish than any other language.

Look at this: (1)....Estoy aqui...(sp.)- I am here
(2).....Estou aqui...(port.)- I am here

Both mean the same, with portuguese being kind of a copy-cat
