Back in the 50s when rock music and actions associated with it (like hip-shaking and hip grinding and all such "sexual moves") was gaining ground due to people like Elvis and others, some of the religious people were apalled and considered that such music could only come from the devil. LOL!!!

Yes. There are some Christians who consider Christian rock sinful.

Who really cares? It is just music. Some of these people need to get a life.

I am uncertain about who first thought up that rock music was the devil's music, including Christian rock. However, I am certain that the idea came from the fact that the "traditional music" most of the West was familiar with had the elements of harmony, melody, predictable rhythms, clearly understandable lyrics with positive messages and represented the cultural norms of Western societies. Most rock music lacked harmony, melody, had unpredictable rhythms with emphasis on volume, was frequently difficult to understand or had inaudible or absent lyrics. The rock music typically, had socially noncomforming (often negative) messages in them that represented some cultures that were not recognized or endorsed by the mainstream populations of the West. The "unfamiliar, unknown, and noncomforming" frequently, gets demonized in the West.

I don't know, but I think that it started in the 50s because some people are suspicious of anything new.

Plus there is the fact that Rock&Roll is based in part on African music (so there was the racist idea that anything African is voodoo).

Then there was Elvis who made all the young girls pass out by shaking his hips.

In the 60s, rock music became identified with free love (hippe sex), drugs, and youth rebellion againist everything traditional. Many rock groups realized that there was money in delibertly playing to the young rebellious croud (like "White Rabbit" by Jeffersion Airplane, for example).

Later, many rock groups dlibertly playing into this "outlaw" image by trying to glorify evil (like "Black Sabbath", etc.).

I'm guessing rednecks and/or fundamentalist christians. No offense, I'm christian, but fundies do seem to think virtually everything is evil, especially if it involves any type of fun.

I remember a song by Alice Cooper that they banned. It was telling people about child abuse, but people figured because the name of the song was "Dead babies" it must be evil, so they banned it instead of listening to it first. It was a really good song, and had a great message, but most people never got to hear it. Of course, that was back before child abuse was big news, it was pretty much hushed up back then.

I think Elvis Presley and KISS lead towards many conservative church memebers being lead to believe rock music is the devils music. and yes, many people in my church do believe that Christian rock is still the devils music

I don't know who started it but there are a lot of things that Christian people believe that are unfounded. If your music makes you think of, and worship Christ, then go on with it. If it stimulates other emotions, like sexual then it certainly is not of God.
