No. It's his birthday now and do it now for him and then for her next month.
50th is big, so do it right. Get all the black crepe paper, tomb stones, "over the hill" banners and play all the great 70's music from when he was in h.s. (he's the same age as I am). Blow up some fun pictures of him, when he was a baby, a little tyke, j.r. high and high school, and college. He'll get a laugh out of those. Have people write things they remember about him, funny, silly and good, that they will say at the party. Find out what is favorite rock group was back in h.s. and get their music as a great gift. Have fun with it, it's a milestone day in his life that he will remember.

yes if Mom has a b-day then too, wait and to it. But you can get him a nice day out with you, playing golf,go to the show,or take him to a nice pup with a striper. Just do some men stuff. Get him a bottle wine he always wanted and could not afford, get him a zigarre from Cuba, just something really special. Have a few friends come and if the can play an instrument let them play Happy Birthday

For my 50th. my ex held a surprise party.. I mean a SURPRISE PARTY ! She had called me on my B day and said all the right things..
(we had been separated for 3 or 4 years)
Then a week later called me for help with a thing.. I helped her with the thing. Then she suggested dinner out as payment.
When I walked in the ENTIRE BAR was filled with kids, step kids, friends, friends of kids, friends of step kids, friends of friends of step kids. Hell I think the buss boys invited friends..
It was the greatest party ever and because it was AFTER my real B day was a total surprise. The "date" didn't matter to me. That these folks all went to the trouble did..
And I would NOT include it with anyone Else's B day.. That will take away some of the power of the event...
************************************************************* EDIT
MadforMAC has GREAT ideas !!!!!
