A great way to get a mellow dog is to adopt him/her.

You can search for adult-aged dogs in your zip code. The rescue organization will tell you about the health, the personality, and even the history of the dog. You can see pictures, and help to control the overwhelming amount of dogs in shelters.

One great thing about adopting is that you don't have to "guess" about the dog's personality (like you would with a puppy from a breeder or pet store). If you are not planning to show the dog, there is no need for a particular breed. Just look at the individuals and how they might fit into your life.

There are several factors to think about. Are you active at all so you can play with and walk the dog for exercise? Do you have children or will the dog be exposed to small children? I am partial to bulldogs (not Pit bulls or anything) like an English bulldog such as the one from Men in Black. I also like Standard Poodles and Basset hounds. Good thing to do is go to a pet store or even better the humane society in your area and see how the dogs are acting. I had a Corgi mix (with husky I believe). She was adopted from the Humane Society. She was very calm and very easygoing. She was also good with other animals. I woulnd't get an older animal because of health problems and sometimes when they are older they are grouchy and don't like any contact at al if they aren't used to it.

I own a greyhound and he is very mellow.
He sleeps most of the time. But like any dog, some will go after prey. If you need a cat safe greyhound make sure the adoption group knows, they can test them for you.

Giant breed dogs are truly mellow and are often considered the kings of the couch. Great Danes, St. Bernards, even Bulldogs (not American bulldogs, the little bully kind).

First of all, a retired greyhound is sweet, not mellow. They are affectionate and kind but still need to run and get excercise a lot. Pugs are spunky but don't need much excercise. Japanese chins are small and very calm. Newfoundlands are extremely large but calm and good with children. Pekingeses are calm but tends to bark a lot. Rottweilers, though perceived as tough and mean, are described as "loyal and mellow" on dogbreedinfo.com. So consider a Pug, Chin, Newfie, Peke, or Rottie as your next best friend!

adopt a retired greyhound. They are about as mellow as you get.

EDIT: When adopting a retired greyhound they go into foster homes to be tested around cats and other dogs. Most are not introduced to any other pets.

BTW I adopted an old dog (age 10) and hes pretty hyper actually. More hyper than my 6 yr old dog

i like fat dogs they are normally mellowed due to the fact they can not carry thier weight around anyways try a bulldog.....lol they are fat

well it doesn't matter about the breed you pick what kind of dog you like then go to a breeder and look at all the pups and you pick the quiet one of the group!
