I was in the RAF, and had discipline there but my parents were also strict and laid down rules to keep me safe. How would you teach the kids of today what is right and wrong and how would you punish / reward them?

You have to educate children about the consequences (good or bad) of their actions, in order to help them learn to make good decisions and be responsible for their own behavior.

"Discipline" is simply an adjunct, negative consequence of some behavior. But you can't just discipline children without also catching them doing something right and rewarding that. When someone is praised for doing well it makes them want to do better.

My son gets his priveledges (game boy, bike, friends over, video games, parks, etc) ONLY after he has done his school work to my standards, and has not misbehaved all day. He is not rewarded for misdeeds. For minor infractions, games are taken. For big or disrespectful things, he gets a spanking and items taken away. That's what I do. I stay on my boy like white on rice because I aim to raise an honorable young man, with virtue and knowledge of right from wrong.

Dr.Sears' propaganda is teaching kids to rule over their parents. Won't be happening in my home. I don't give a damn what the government says.

After nearly 60 years on this earth I am despondent with your future. The worst thing that happened was the TV. Although it had education and fun it destroyed family life. The family no longer sat at the table and talked. Teachers lost respect when the hippy ones suggested the kids call them by their first name. The police lost respect when they decided to stay away from the public and hide in cars. I remember my village copper even today. He would clip your ear or tell your parents then you would get another one. Imagine that today. You had police men not university career men. Then national service. It took people away from doing nothing. Taught them discipline and team spirit. We may have many better things in life today but without respect and discipline in our young people we head for disaster.
