First let me say that this is the best Q&A I've read yet. There is intelligent life here. Thanx.
I think that Icarus has a great point regarding the emotional side of religion. America is a young country. Our culture is still defining itsself, like a teen. Europe is much older and perhaps metaphorically past the troubled "emotional stage" that we find ourselves in here. I do believe there will come a time when religion has faded to a distant memory of our infancy.

Religion invented by Kings as a means of control? You couldn't be more wrong. What I see in the world are people controlled by their lustful desires thus creating unwanted children and spreading diseases. I see people controlled by their addiction to drugs / alcohol breaking up families and ruining lives. I see people controlled by their love of food, causing obesity, diabeties, heart problems etc etc. I see people controlled by their love of money, working too many hours and neglecting their families. I see people controlled by the riches of the world, becoming selfish and greedy while others starve. The world throws us a dirty rotten bone and a lot of us love to feed on it and get sick not realising it's the bone that made us sick. Some of us want more than this, and know deep down that life is much more. We want the truth about life and how to live it properly. What better teacher than Jesus Christ and the gospels?
God loves us unconditionally and being able to know and feel that is a great grace. When we cut ourselves off from God by declaring he does not exist we try to fill that void with that "rotten bone". Quick fixes of food, drugs, sex etc. These are only quick fixes, but God's love is constant and for those who understand that will know why people are still religious in 2006

I don't think the children of generation X will be able to stop the cycle. It took hundreds upon hundreds of years to get to this state and will likely take just as many to come away from it. I think with each passing generation a little more will chip away until there is a whole new outlook on society. I just know that at my age I will not be around to see it and I am sad to think I could not help contribute to it because I cannot have children.

Excuse me, you mention time and science at the same time, wow you must be smart? I tell you what, I will give you the fact that the Bible does not mention a lot of things, if you will give me the fact that science does not have a clue about time?? Some Scientist think that time is just a closed loop. The Bible talks about one day of the Lord being equal to a thousand years on Earth.
As for Evolution, I know this is simple for such a bright mind as you have but how can you evolve useless you exist. I don't want to hurt your feelings but you are trapped in a propaganda war. Evolution was used in Communism to destroy Faith in God. The top Minds today don't necessarily acknowledge God as we know Him but they say that life is just to complicated to have evolved from some bog somewhere. If it did someone or something had to make that mud.
Uncle Albert, now I know that he was not as smart as you, but he says that the Universe, moon, stars planets and you and me came from something smaller than the Hydrogen atom's proton. Wow. isn't that creation.

Well, America is only about 5% athiest. I'd say that over time the various religions of the world will mix together as the various cultures of the world mix together, and the world will enter into a somewhat agnostic state over the course of the next few hundred years, with a few groups of people ferverntly clinging to specific lore, most likely having a cultic and possibly violent outlook on things.

Europe isn't free of religion yet, especially in its fast-growing immigrant communities; and remember, the Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches all have their roots in Europe.
I'd like to believe that the end of religion is upon us, but I can't. Religious indoctrination of the fundamentalist variety continues to flourish on this side of the Atlantic, and religious wars are being fought in Africa, Indonesia, and the Middle East -- wars whose repercussions will last for at least two more generations (memories are long, especially in the Middle East).
We're not ready to grow up yet.

Religion fulfils emotional needs rather than answering intellectual questions. For many people it seems that believing what you wish was true is more important than believing what is rationally justified. For this reason I'm not at all sure that religion will ever die out entirely, although it seems likely that it will become restricted to a wacky minority as it already is in the more enlightened parts of the world, e.g. here in England.

They will be religious because the "prey" (left-wing) mentality in the west makes us easy targets for Islamists, simply play this "death of a million cuts" scenario out another 50 years and the result is clear.
Like the barbarian invasions and the dark ages, religion (Islam) will reverse mankind again...maybe for good. Thank the weak-kneed leftists who lack the fortitude to stay on the survival end of the Darwinian reality we live in.
Too bad leftists dont understand evolution, dont you agree?

i think people confuse religion and faith in god. I agree that religions were made by humans (like laws) to create a sort of order. So nowadays we don't need religion. We have laws that do the same job. But human beings will always need to believe in a superior existence that created them and will always protect them. It's an easy way to feel safe

People will simply find a way to change their religious beliefs so that they align with science. Darwin is similar to Galileo in that sense.
Looking at the trend in Europe, I think it's possible for humans to overcome religion.
