My husband has an interview tomorrow, recently made redundant from a 15 year job and I've been told that interviews now involve singing, role-play and 'team-building exercises (basically sounds like making a fool of yourself)'????? do you have experience of this and can you explain WHY they do this stuff these days??

There are more people in the job pool now then there have been in past years. That said, employers have invented ways to differentiate potential candidates. Yes, it's stupid in most cases, but just tell your husband to keep in mind they use these exercises to gauge teamwork and strategic thinking.

Good Luck - Knock 'em dead!!

We can thank the Americans for that. People used to go for an interview and they would tell you there and then whether you have the job or not. Now you have to apply about three weeks before the closing date then wait a week to be informed (if they bother to reply) that you have an interveiw then wait about 3weeks to see if you have the job.

it will always depend on the job you go for my recent interview was just questions questions questions some the same thing but just reworded my friend on the other hand went for one at 10 o'clock they looked him up and down asked him two questions and was starting his training by 11 o'clock !!!! my hubby always doing driving just has to turn up looking respectable with his drivers licence in hand !!!!there are many web sites out there with interview questions and tactics give one a go
they have so many people going for each job i think they just keep inventing new ways to make you squirm good and as for group interviews how can you shine when some prat in the front asks all the questions before you can !!!
good luck if your meant to get it you will

Its a load of crap, down to psychologists who want to keep their overpaid jobs. I went to an interview for a computer supervisor, and was asked to explain how I would improve the city traffic flow problems. When I said I dont drive, I was asked what facilities I would provide for drug-users in the town centre!!! The job was with a catering company!!! (I was offered it, and turned it down- they were nuts!!!)

They are trying to test you're ability to adapt to any and all situations. They are hoping to get to know as much about you as possible to see if you will be a good fit for their company. It's the new fad, it doesn't work, neither did the handwriting analysis that was so popular in the seventies. They aren't trying to make a fool of you and if you go in and just relax and be yourself, you'll have as good a chance as the next guy.

To ensure that they hire the "perfect candidate" not someone who will quit after 6 months or a year.

I believe that modern interviewing techniques are bunk anyway. Best Buy hires people on the spot when they are desperate for manpower, especially for the holidays.

It depends on the type of job, and I do not believe I have ever heard that someone is asked to sing unless the job requires singing.
