For a 12 y.o. the best advice I can give you is a PREPAID phone such "Go Phone" with a preset number of minutes. If the child gets an allowance or is allowed to 'earn' extra money around the house this is also an excellent way of helping the child to learn responsibility. What I do with my kids(nieces and nephew...my son is grown) and their phones is for each dollar of their allowance(which they earn by doing what's expected of them) they put back and save to buy extra time with their phone I will match dollar for dollar. This teaches them the responsibility and importance of EARNING and SAVING their money for the things they really want and need. We've done this with every one of our children and it's proven time and again to work beautifully. This also helps with other skills such as time management and budgeting as well. All around winner. Most all of the phone plans now have the 9-1-1 feature still enabled even if there are no minutes left on the plan so if she needs the phone in an emergency situation the GPS system in the phone will allow 'First Response' officers to get to her no matter where she may be.

I strongly suggest that you buy her a prepaid phone, and make her manage and earn her minutes. This will not only teach her responsibility, but also budgeting and time management... all very useful skills for her future. Trac Phone is a good idea, although Cingular does have the best wireless coverage. Alltell has the best plans, with the ability to call any cell phone for free. There are a lot of choices out there that you may find within your budget. Try Wal-Mart for starters, though.

Not sure I would advice you to give your 12year old a cell phone. Dotty as this may sound, research is still unfinished as to its effect on your brain in the long term. Also, young children can get into all sort of trouble with a cell phone. How about a phone card instead.

everybody is against 12-3 hundred and sixty 5 days-olds with cellular telephones as a results of fact, drumroll please, they do no longer desire THEM. toddlers are already addicted to texting at an prolonged time of 14, 15, sixteen, etc. Why addict people who are not even toddlers yet? i do no longer actually have a cellular telephone, i've got on no account had a cellular telephone. i'm plenty older than twelve, and human beings think of that's nuts yet i do no longer understand why - i could on no account rather use a cellular telephone. everybody is basically cellular telephone addicts in recent times, so as that they think of everybody desires and could have a cellular telephone. i do no longer. everybody is texting whilst they are driving and inflicting extreme motor vehicle injuries - would not that let us know something? that everybody is somewhat too related to their telephones? If that would not, i do no longer understand what's going to. yet 12-3 hundred and sixty 5 days-olds do no longer desire cellular telephones.

Go with a family share plan so you can talk to each other for free, something like Cingular or T-Mobile's family share plan, or go with sprint... I don't like sprint except that the free nights & weekends start from 7pm to 7am, the others have it at 9pm to 7am or 6am usually...
