Ignore the first answer.
The dog will start to have contractions. Her abdomen will tighten and she may show signs she is in pain. When she starts doing that, the first puppy should be born within an hour and a half. If not, get to a vet.
Puppies should come out every half hour or so. If she stops having contractions and you can feel puppies still inside her, go to a vet.
Both these instances are emergencies. Go quickly to a veterinarian. Call around now so you know a good one for after hours. Better to prepare now and not have to scramble around.

In most cases the temperature will drop a whole degree about 12-24 hours before whelping.
At this time she may start to pant and have a discolored discharge from the vulva, she may be off her food and have slight diarrhea.

With a maiden B she can whelp two days early.
Whelping can last anywhere between 12 to 48 hours. Depending on the size of the dog, as the smaller the less pups, the larger, more pups to deliver.

If she goes for longer than an hour and half between pups, she may need veterinary assistance.
