Balsamic vinegar is a red vinegar that comes from Italy - it is a bit like a red wine vinegar but a bit thicker and less acidic. Red wine vinegar can be used as a substitute say when making salad dressing but it is a VERY POOR substitute - too thin and much too vinegary.

I wouldn't use the white vinegar as a substitute for balsamic. White vinegar is too sour. There's no sweetness and that's what's nice about balsamic. If you must serve the blackberry vinegarette then make the trip. Or, search for a different recipe. Edit: I just realized that you said white WINE vinegar and not plain white vinegar. I've added a little honey to "rice wine" vinegar and it worked worked out for me. Could you make a quarter recipe and test it before you ruin your vinegarette? I've done this a couple of times when I wanted to make an orange vinegarette.

Balsamic vinegar is a rather sweetish vinegar made from wine must and aged in barrels, sometimes for over 50 years (but that is VERY expensive stuff!) Real Balsamic vinegar comes from Modena, ITaly. It doesn't have the strong acidy taste of regular vinegars. There really isn't a substitute that I know of that would taste like it. You should be able to find balsamic vinegar in the supermarket. Go for a decent mid-priced brand, the cheap stuff can be cloying. Mix it with a good olive oil, a few chopped capers and some fresh ground pepper for a nice pasta salad dressing.

Balsamic vinegar (Italian: aceto balsamico) is a traditional flavoured vinegar commonly used in Italian cuisine. It is also often used as a salad dressing when combined with oil. It is a traditional product originating in Modena, where it has been made since the Middle Ages and some of the denominations (notably: "Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena") are protected by the European Union. Unlike common vinegars, it is dark and thick with a complex, sweet taste and is much more expensive.
In its long-aged forms (at least 10 and even up to 25 years) it is often taken straight or served over strawberries, while the more mass-market vinegar (usually aged 3 years or less) is used in salad dressings and marinades.
Balsamic vinegar of the highest quality, labeled tradizionale, usually sells for very high prices; a small (100 ml) bottle can cost between US $100 and $400.
There are no substitutes for balsamic vinegar.

Balsamic means it's thick, or 'like balsam', an aromatic resin. From Modena, Italy, made from the unfermented juice of the Trebbiano grape (and some others), which is boiled down in open pots over direct flame. Some vinegar 'mother' is then added (think sourdough starter - same concept), and then aged.
Not really a good substitute, it's a very distinctive taste and use -- you can find some relatively inexpensive brands (even Wal-Mart carries it), probably minimum is $6 a bottle, and it can go significantly more than that.

Nothing quite like it. I like to make salads w/ just a very little extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, & lime or lemon juice, fresh ground pepper & that's it, w/ french baguette. Bon Appetit! You can also use it in reduction sauces, I use it when I pan fry steaks.
