Very interesting. Renee Descartes is known as the father of modern mathematics and philosophy. He is probably most famous for his philosophical work on the nature of the existence of man and the statement “I think, therefore I am.” Part of his work argued that the existence of God could not be proved or disproved, but in the lack of any real evidence either way, the truly clever person would live their life as though God did exist. After all, most of us are moral beings and living a good Christian life takes nothing away from our quality of life. Indeed, some would argue that with the positive attitude shown my most “proper” Christians and not Sunday only Christians, there are definite benefits. So in this life most Christians loose nothing in comparison to their atheist or agnostic counterparts and studies have shown that Christians recover from major surgery faster, are less likely to suffer from debilitating disease and live slightly longer. The pay off comes when we die. If the Christian is wrong, then what have they lost in this life? Think about it – nothing really. Everybody will mourn their passing and comment on the good life they led. What other legacy will most of us leave? But what if the Christian is right?

If I was an athiest... I would be an athiest because I would be an unbeliever in the Christian God....
We sometimes make the mistake of thinking that statements such as "X is a Christian" and "Y is an Atheist" are similar statements. Yes, they are grammatically identical, but logically they are very different (aside from being theologically different).
The "a-" prefix in "atheism" and "atheist" is the negative prefix in Greek, and it means simply "non-," "not." Atheist means, then, "not a theist." And that is ALL it means. (A "theist" is one who has some belief in a deity or deities.)
Since none of these people have a belief in God, they are not theists. Therefore, the term a-theist (non-theist) is appropriate for them, even though the term tells us nothing more about their beliefs, their morals, or their lives than that one bare, negative fact.

Because there is absolutely no reason to believe in a fairy tale that has no factual basis. Plus, with the hundreds of cults and sects, how could you possibly pick the right one?
Proud - actually, the default is theist because most children are brainwashed by their parents and authority figures while growing up. There is no evidence to support a claim of any of the religions. The converse is true: the more education, wisdom and life experience you get, the less likely you are to believe in fairy tales, no matter how popular.

Because I have a right to be just you have a right to belive in your make belive GOD I thus have a right to belive in your wrongs and belive that one does nto exist. I know I am right because I belive for my self and no one has ever seen your stupid god that you so call your savior and yet comit crime, rape kids and do all sort of nasty stuff and then hide behind your bible and church. I take responsibilty for my won actions instead of blaming society, devil, satan etc. Why do you need god (s) if you are good at heart. If you dont do wrong and obey the laws why do you need a place to hide when you comit crimes and then blame the rest of the world buut take responsibility for your own doing. Stop being a bible pushing nut case and stop pushing your belives on us Athiests and live us alone. You dont see us trying to converrt you. You try to because to get your so called points to get into heaven. Why cant you just be good and follow your make belive laws instead of trying to solve the worlds issues that you all create. Live us alone... is that to much to ask.....

I have read the bible, the quran, the book of mormon and many more religious texts. I have talked with people of varying faiths as to why and what they believe and I have talked with college professors who teach religion in both secular and religious-based universities and given the evidence put before me I see no case for deities existing. That's it in a nutshell for me. I didn't have anything go bad or wrong in my life, I'm not rebelling (at 37 I'm way past that stage) this is how I see what is before me.
I believe in humanity.

I specifically reject the dogmatism ...the blind faith in the absolute truth... of an abrahamic god.
There's a misconception that you cannot be spiritual without believing in a creator god. This isn't true. There's spritual inspiration all around us, in understanding the growth and expansion of the universe. In seeing how everything is connected. In the clarity and unity math, nature, science, and philosophy.
Some people see believing in theology and mythology, and in a single truth in a subjective universe, as limiting.

The default condition of humanity is to not believe in God. In order to believe in God, you have to have been told about him and to have some weird sort of psychological condition that makes the idea of God appealing and palatable. I do not believe in things I can't perceive or deduce rationally. I'm just not built that way. If you want me to believe in God, you're going to have to do better than you've been doing.

The default position is atheism, lack of belief in a god. A person becomes a theist once enough evidence has been presented to him to support the existence of a deity. For me, no one has presented enough credible evidence to support the existence of any gods, so I don't believe in any gods.

I'm only atheist because some other nutjob is theist and I don't share his belief because there is no good reason for me to...
