I can still recall those vivid memories of adolescence...ah
Things to NOT talk about.
1. Shopping
2. Your friends
3. Clothes
4. nothing
Things that will get the teens talkin
1. Music is an easy target. Who doesn't like music or at least have an opinion about it?
2. last book you've read. This is actually a trick question. If the guy can't remember then he's probably only good for a one-nighter
3. What the toughest class in High School was. This is a great way to bond and a great way to see his academic prowess.

ok i feel kinda creepy for answering this because im 30 plus years old and im asnwering to a teen age girl, but anyways, this is what you do, when you walk up to him think of a good opener that will bascially force him to respond one way or another. A good way to do this is to ask him his opinion on something. Say something like " hey me and my friends are having a debate on what guys think look hotter, long hair or short hair? what do you think?" this way he has to have an answer and that will get it started anyways.

Food is always a good topic. Just mention some non-fast food to get things going like, "Have you ever had Greek/Vietnamese/Szechuan Chinese, etc. food?" If he replies with curiosity, suggest you try it together.
Simple but sweet.

Each situation is going to be different, just be bold and a little flirtatious. When in doubt ask yourself "what would (insert someone u look up to) do?"
