This pretty much applies to almost every American in the Middle class or higher.
My friend wanted to buy a car about 2 years ago, but when he saw the Prius, he said that it was the ugliests car ever made (and I agree). Now with gas prices being up, he says all this stupid s*it about he wants to save money on gas, so he buys a prius.
It's his money, and he can do what he wants with it, but it pissed me off that he was talking about how he would never buy an ugly car because he is too good for them. Now he is still driving that ugly a*s car. And I call him a dumba*s every time I see him in it.

The price on gas made him sell out. He'll either start hating it or get used to it and think that its actually attractive. Being a sell out can distort your vision.

Buying a prius to "save money" is ridiculous. I understand why most people think it saves money (50 mpg vs. 15 mpg) but consider this:
1. A new Yaris starts at 12k. A new prius starts at 22k. That's 10k difference.
2. Let's say gas was $4/gallon. That's 2500 gallons of gas you could buy with the Yaris before you hit the price of a Prius.
3. The Yaris gets 40 mpg. That's 100k miles before you've used up your 2500 gallons of 'free' gas. That's pretty much as long as most people keep their cars.
Grand totals after 100k miles:
Yaris: $22k
Prius: $30k (at 51 mpg)
The only reason to buy the Prius (or any other hybrid for that matter as they are all comparble in price) is to be a part of the movement. But like betamax, the movement will probably switch to a gasless car by the time hybrids are cost-effective.

The original Prius was ugly, new one isn't that that bad. The Pontiac Aztec is a DOG! And how old are you, Sunshine, 16? The gas prices are NOT going down. The oil companies have a well know and unstoppable agenda to get gas prices up to $5/gal in the U.S.
So he compromised style for fuel economy. Sue him!

As far as I know, hybrids are only good for people who only drives in the city, probably less than 10 per cent of the drivers. I drive a lot in the highway and I can get better mileage with a Focus, a Civic or a Cobalt.

Personally if I was to buy a hybrid, It would be a Camry or a Civic. They both get almost 50 mpg and look nice also.

hey, well, at least he isn't sending as much money to our enemies in the middle east, not polluting as much, and generally being part of the solution, instead of part of the problem.
Bravo to your friend for being man enough to make a conscious decision, even though his school yard friends make fun of him.
