I believe in the all natural way...meaning no shots, no kibble, and so on. Just how do I stop fleas without the use of insecticides?

Just as a starter...I have some blue Dawn....does that work?

Garlic or brewers yeast can be somewhat effective in prevention, but do little to get rid of an existing flea problem.

I understand that you want to keep it natural, I am the same about my dogs, but in some cases, you have to weigh the benefits vs. the risks.

Fleas get ingested by your dog and cause tape worms. Tape worms can be transmitted to children and cause blindness. They also do considerable damage to the inside of your dog if left untreated. The poisons you have to put into your dog to kill tapeworms is much more toxic to your dog than a monthly flea preventative.

If your dog already has fleas, you will have to treat the dog, the house, the yard and the dog's bedding, or they will be back. They will also bite you. Blood is blood, and they don't really care if it is an animal or human. A monthly preventative is the most effective and least risky way to prevent, or get rid of fleas on your dog.

I live in the south where fleas are a huge problem. I treat my dogs with Frontline in the summer and in the fall, but give it a break in the winter and spring. It's a compromise that works for me, and keeps my dogs healthier.

Garlic and onion is toxic to pets, it causes anaemia. Tea tree oil (or melaleuca as it's scientific name) is also toxic, indeed are many essential oils such as lavender. Permethrin, which you should be able to get from your vet is a natural flea repellant, it is made from crysanthemums. Personally, I would use revolution, it treats fleas, heartworm preventative, ear mites, lice, etc but discuss the treatment with your vet. You have to weigh up the pros and cons, there is no guarantee that a "natural" product won't cause the skin condition to flare up and the risk of inflammation from flea bites is far greater. You can spot test a patch first, many vets will give a free first sample and you put a little on and watch for a reaction, if there is none, then you're good to go.

Well, Dawn will get the fleas off for the time being, but they will not keep the cat from being infested. Is Dawn all natural?????? Seems like there are a lot of chemicals in it. It sounds like you are cheap.
There are some things that you can treat "naturally" and some you can't. What are you going to treat with when the cat has tapeworms from the fleas????????? There is no natural treatment for that either. Just do what is best for the cat, and that is to NOT be covered with fleas. Advantage is very safe.
Dawn used too much will dry the skin and leave the cat open for more problems.

I use Brewer Yeast on my dogs. It works great. You can find it at any vitamin store. I do not know anything about Blue Dawn. P.S. put the powder in the dogs food. You do not need to use alot, just a little will work.

ive heard of using dawn and have used it on my dogs (they are alive and healthy, its also what some groomers use to get car oil out of a dogs coat). ceder is also a natural flea repellent. sprinkle some ceder chips in your yard and put some in his bed. as far as no shots goes, in most states animals at least have to have a rabies shot. shots arent bad and they dont really hurt. the benefits from them out weigh the diseases they prevent by a long shot. hope you reconsider the shots.

herb known as fleabain/penny royal can be used. Make a tea of 1quart of water and 2 cups of herb and spray your dog and house. Bay leave is a good insect repellent.
