We are teaching our 4 year old to be bilingual (English and Spanish). When he was your child’s age, we spoke to a linguist who recommended to only speak to him on our native tongue. He took longer to speak but he understands both languages now. Just make sure to be consistent and patient. At this age their brains absorb tremendous amounts of information and it is amazing how they sort it out.

I found this website useful http://iteslj.org/Articles/Rosenberg-Bilingual.html

Good luck!

Bilingual kids are usually late on talking. But when they do start talking, they'll be talking two languages, so they'll be at a complete advantage.

In order to be the most effective, teach your child ONLY your language for the first five years, and then let your child learn English in school. They catch up quickly with the English. But it's better they know a foreign language first, then learn English in school.

By all means, teach the baby both languages. Kids learn so much faster than adults do and it is easier for them to learn for the start. I am a preschool teacher and I have 4 kids in my class that speak two languages. They have actually taught us some words. Use your language at home and english in public, the baby will pick up both.

Im bilingual and i'd like to see how its going to turn out... my mother in law is bilingual as so is my husband but his little brother sucks when he speaks its all weird when he talks so i think we should start them off on one language first then english cus they will learn english anyway. Id like my son to speak as well as i do in spanish... i hope it works and that he doesnt sound all messed up.
