I was told that if you leave cucumbers in a jar for a long time then they will turn into pickles. Is that true?

You have to add somethings to the jar like vinegar, spices, sugar and salt; but yes, cucumbers can become pickles.

Pickles are pickled cucumbers. You can pickle any vegetable. Cucumbers have become most associated with the concept of pickling, and thus, when pickled, are simply clled "Pickles."

What you need to do is put cucumbers (or any other vegetable) in a jar 2/3 of the way filled with salt water (not too much salt, just enough so it tastes rather salty; this all depends on the size of the jar and the amount of water, as well as the amount of vegetables and their sizes. Your own judgement should be fine; it isn't a fine art) along with a small slice of bread. Also put a small amount of yeast in the water. The other 1/3 of the jar should then be filled with vinegar. Mix everything in the jar together, but make sure the slice of bread stays a single piece.

You must close the jar, obviously, and leave it in a dark place for a 1.5-2 months. You will have pickled vegetables.

NO, who ever told you this is joking with you.
You can make pickles out of cucumbers (in fact that is what a pickle is) and there are many good recipes for doing this but it will not magically happen by itself. You have to make it happen with the right ingredients.
Here is a good web with tons of pickle recipes.

yes that's what pickles are made of. You soak them in vinegar, water, and spices. Emeril Lagasse has a good pickle recipe on foodnetwork.com.

Yes. You do however have to add a pickling agent for that to happen.
