You're talking about avatars, little red crosses and cookies. These are all things related to the internet and it makes me wonder if the problem isn't with Windows but with your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc). If this is so then you may want to reinstall your browser before looking at restoring files or reinstalling windows,

Try downloading the current version of your browser and see if that resolves the problem.

If it doesn't then you may be able to recover the files you've deleted from the recycle bin. Double click on the recycle bin icon on your desktop, this will open a list of all the deleted files. If you know which files you want to recover then select the files in question (hold down the Ctrl key whilst you single click each of the files with your mouse) then right any one of the highlighted files and select Restore from the drop down menu.

You could restore the files/folders one by one until things are back to normal.

If you want to restore ALL the files you've recently deleted then click on View > Arrange Icons By > Date Deleted. The list of files in the recycle bin will now be in order with the most recently deleted one at the top. Click the very top file in the list, scroll down the list until you find the first file you deleted whilst doing the clean-up, hold down the shift key (the one with the 'up arrow' on it) and click this file. All the files between the two you clicked should be highlighted. Right click any highlighted file and select restore from the drop down menu.

With the files restored things should be back to normal.

Avatars aren't stored on your local hard-drive (C drive). Your Yahoo Avatar on this site is stored on Yahoo's computer so no matter what files you have or don't have, your avatar on this or any other site with avatars shouldn't be affected.

As for deleting cookies. These can be deleted - in Internet Explorer click on Tools > Internet Options > Delete Cookies. At the same time you can click Delete Files and this will delete the temporary internet files from your hard drive.

After you delete the cookies certain settings on certain websites may be lost - for example, if you use a site where you have a language preference or if you've ticked the 'remember me' option on sites that you have to log in to.

If your avatar is anything to go by then you don't look like an X in a square. This is a symbol that is displayed by a web browser when it's unable to retrieve an image - it usually means that the image has been moved, deleted or renamed.

Hope this is of some help to you and you get things sorted out.

Yes you can delete cookies. If its PC/internet explore, go to TOols, Internet options, and one of the option is delete cookies.

As far as seeing an X, I'd get a Win 98 CD somewhere, looks like you deleted something important like your colors. Are you seeing black and white?
