Canada is not at war in the middle east. Current middle east deployment is under the UN for the most part. The UN missions prevent the use of force except under tightly controlled circumstances.
If you're talking about Afghanistan, it's not in the middle east. The Canadian military is not on a peace keeping mission there. They are currently in Afghanistan supporting the democratically elected government against the Taliban. It is, and always was a combat mission. These combat deployments are under NATO auspices and involve a large number of countries.
Why are Canadian soldiers deployed overseas? They are defending the rights and freedoms that some of us hold so dear. Afganistan is now a democratic country, and if they wanted to be run by terrorists they could have elected the Taliban. Afghanistan said no to terror, but they need our help. Now Canadian soldiers are paying for the freedoms of the Afghan's with the only recognized currency, their last breath, their last drop of blood.
Why does Canada need to defend freedom in a country that is half way around the world? I find this question the scariest. The last couple of times isolationism was so popular and there was a palpable threat to democratic freedoms, we ended up in world wars. Leaving European issues for Europeans to answer, lead to the requirement of world involvment in WW1. Chamberlain proclaiming "We have peace in our time" should be remembered as people clamour that we negotiate with terrorists.
History offers a number of lessons, and one that I think needs reflection is a comparison between the start of the Second Punic war and the Second World War. In the preceding conflicts for each, the antagonists were able to claim victory even in defeat (Much like Hezbollah, al-Quaeda, Hamas, Iran and North Korea do, and Saddam Hussein did), the peace treaties left them feeling subjugated to a power in a way they felt was onerous (Anything less than the destruction of Israel for Hamas and Hezbollah and anything short of reviving the Caliphate under al-Queda).
Both the Second Punic War and WW2 were massively destructive wars, maybe if we do things thoroughly, and properly this time, we won't have to do it again on a broader scale.

We are not in the Middle East, we are in Afghanistan. I'd rather our Canadian government be close with the United States and NOT with the likes of Iran, North Korea, Syria.
We are fighting the Taliban so young girls can go to school, so women are not afraid to leave their home unescorted by a male relative, so people can listen to music and have all the enjoyment in life they deserve.

I am not sure Canada is fighting, perhaps peace keeping for humanitarian reasons, as the Israelis can not even beat a rag tag army.....

They are helping in the war in Afghanistan. They are also members of Nato so they will be involved in most of the peace keeping activities.

It's supposed to be for peacekeeping. I wish we weren't following in the same footsteps as America.

We are in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban. People could argue all day whether or not we should be.
