I'd like something with built-in loops, if possible.

Sorry, have to comment that a Mac is almost the same price? Since when? They still cost way more than a Windows PC ever dreamt of costing, plus you cannot buy anything from anyone but APPLE!

Anyways, I have not heard of anything free that is alternative to Garage Band, sorry...

Ableton stay (luxurious in spite of the incontrovertible fact that mind-blowing); Fruity Loops Studio (FLS); Cakewalk; Any of those will do ya. you could go with some added stuff: midi slave keyboard once you are going to apply VST synthesizers; you would be waiting to go with a digital-audio interface on your pc. good good fortune!

Audacity is a great sound program, free and open source.

Also, I just heard about a program yesterday called Kramixer. Supposedly it's professional DJ software that is used by game makers. I'm not sure, but here is the link. I haven't tried it but I have heard it is good.

Not true that Apple is more expensive. Some people don't have their facts straight. I just bought a top of the line Mac Mini for my Mom, and she is using it with her existing monitor and Keyboard. $500 bucks brand new. How much PC computer do you get for $400 or $500? Pretty Basic. Comes complete with all of the iLife software. PC people want you to believe that Mac is a lot more, but that is not true anymore. To get a PC as powerful as the cheapest Mac Mini, you'd have to spend the same, or more. Don't believe it. You can buy Macs online, Apple Store, CompUSA, and soon, Best Buy. Lots of independent local retailers, too. Once again, some people don't have their facts straight. If they want to say a Yugo is the same as a BMW, what are you going to say? The problem isn't the PC computer, it's the faulty WINDOWS operating system. I use both, so I can speak for both. Any person brought up on Windows can easily switch now. No viruses. No crashes. A sense of style. Do you have a sense of style? If not, stick with your econobox from Walmart.

Hi, Sorry to hear that you were hoodwinked into getting a computer with the "cheaper" Windows OS. I think you should upgrade to a Mac next time you buy a new computer. They are about the same price now, and can run any Windows software that you have. You won't lose anything, you'll just fall in love with your computer. So you had a third rate product from Microsoft, but that doesn't mean that you have to stay stuck with it for the rest of your life. You'll thank me for this comment someday. I've been there. Good luck.
