I have a 13 week old mongrel male puppy and he keeps doing his business indoors, we keep the back door open all day and he has access to the back garden until bedtime, he used to go in the garden all the time, but has now started just doing it in the house, does anybody have any ideas what I can do to stop this behavior, I dont want to crate him.

Another problem is that he seems to be jealous of my daughter and attacks her trousers and socks whenever she walks into the room, she is the same height as me so its not because she is small??

As with children, puppies need your attention and instruction. You wouldn't teach a child to use the toilet by simply leaving the door open. You can't teach a pup that way either. The puppy needs regular walks and plenty of praise for doing the right thing and "getting busy" in the proper place.
At Guiding Eyes for the Blind, we use a command to "get busy" which signals the dog that we have reached a spot where elimination is appropriate.
Dogs don't just naturally learn to behave appropriately. They need training and instruction just like children. The earlier their training begins, the happier you and the dog will be. I would suggest that you both (you and your dog) join a training class. If you are married and/or have children, then remember that consistent behavior regarding the dog is important. Giving the dog mixed messages will lead to training and behavior problems.

You crate your pup to teach him to be clean in the house, and to give him a den to sleep in when he's older. Its not cruel, its how pups are raised in the wild. They stay in the den until the adults return from hunting.
They don't mess in their own bed, so as well as confining them when you can't keep an eye on them you take them to a specific toilet area once an hour, and they soon get the message that the toilet is the spot where you want them to go.
After they go they can play for a while. That routine through the day is natural for a pup, short bursts of activity and rest throughout the day.
You've just left the door open and expect your pup to know where to go, its just not enough. Make a toilet spot, mark it with bricks or something, put him on the lead and take him there every hour. Reward him when he uses it. He's not a mind reader.
As for your pup grabbing your daughter, he's playing but its dominant play, and you must put a stop to this. Your daughter should really be the one to tackle it as she's the one he's doing it to; he mustn't learn he can dominate her.
You can try holding him by the scruff of the neck and giving him a quiet, firm 'no', wait til he calms down then release him.
I suggest you find puppy training classes and both you and your daughter go; this is the ideal time to be training your pup, if you leave it too late you;ll have a disobediant adult dog who is too much of a handful to manage.

#1. Patience #2. Consistancy #3. Time #4. Reward.
and of course the direct opposite for bad behavior. And that does not mean any kind of physical action. It's all verbal and the tone of your voice.
Dont just leave him out. It's more like training YOU. Know your pup. Take him out. When he does his business outside, reward him, with an edible treat as well as verbalization. When he goes indoors, scold him. And be CONSISTANT. He will quickly get the idea. I'm doing same. The prob is I just got this pup that NO one had worked with. In fact I believe she was abused. She's 8 months old. And didnt know anything about a car ride (dogs LOVE to go in vehicles) Walking on a leash, and was definitely not housebroken. We have a pet door. She learned how to use it in 3 days!!! Try the following site. There's a wealth of info there. It's not neccessary to buy their products. G'LUCK!

use a 50/50 mix of vinager and water, then spray it everywhere he chews or goes pee. he'll stop soon. meanwhile 5-15min after the dog eats and drinks make sure you put it outside. If your leaving that door open all day then he probably doesnt know the difference between outdoor and indoor. you need to keep that door shut.
Ya this dog has some issues, it thinks its incharge. You and your daughter need to express your dominence to it. grab that thing by the neck, push it to the ground, look it right in the eye and say, no bad dog. keep looking the dog in the eye until it breaks eye contact with you. Have your daughter do this everytime it attacks her, and you need to do it too when it disobeys you.

keep him on a leash with you while he is inside and you can take him out as soon as he acts like he wants to pee (sniffing around in circles is a good cue). give him plenty of praise when he does go outside. if you cant watch him then he'll need to stay outside or put him in a crate. dont rub his nose in any accidents it will only confuse him b/c he wont make the connection and wont understand why he is being punished and will only become more secretive about where he goes. crates arent mean they give you dog a safe place to be until you can supervise him again. as far as him pulling on you daughter's trouser leg, make "puppy grenades" out of soda cans and small coins or pebbles. tape the top closed and every time he goes after her the throw the puppy grenade in his direction and say "no" in a loud, clear, assertive voice. good luck!

Often asked question, the one thing every new pup owner dreads
Things you need to know first, before you start.
Pups normally arrive to their new home when they are between 8-10 weeks of age. Unfortunately they do not have full bladder control at this age, it is physically impossible for your pup to hold onto it. When he has to go, he will go. How long do I wait then you ask? Well you don't, you start to teach as soon as pup arrives, but you don't expect too much, or the impossible.
By 12 weeks his body has matured and bladder control finally kicks in. Even so, the max amount of time he can hold it for will be between 2-4 hours.
1. Pick a spot outside where you intend for pup to go.
2. Every time you take pup out use the same spot.
3. Take pup out as often as every hour for the first week.
4. Take pup out after every feed, drink, exercise, play time.
Even if pup doesn't go, that's fine, just wait with pup for a few minutes, if you get a result then give heaps and heaps of praise.
Be consistant, don't give up and never rub pups nose in his excrements if he does do it inside, all you will do is confuse the pup and possibly turn him against you.

Have the same problem, my pup is 5 months old and has been clean for weeks on end and then goes and lets himself down, usually just after having done something naughty, its almost a defiance thing (he is not a submissive dog in any way, just the opposite Any suggestions on curing this problem would be appreciated. I will not smack him.
In answer to the original question, perhaps something frightened him in the garden just as he was doing his "jobs" and he has made a wrong connection, thinking he had better not do it there

be cruel to be kind .
next time he does it smack him rub his nose in it and lock him outside for an hour .
he will get the message but because he is young he will forget ,
so next time just shout at him while pointing at the mess (make sure he knows what he has done) then put him out .
I done this twice while looking after a friends pup who had spent nearly nine months sleeping while locked in the back porch and not being allowed up the stairs and being shouted at constantly for his habit .
He was cured in 2 days and has never done it again , he now has the run of the house , sleeps where he wants and is loved by everyone .
Make sure he knows what he's done wrong then punish him for it
ps there is no point in shouting at him 10 minutes later because you'll just confuse him and probably make him pee .
Also pups tend to pee when they are excited and only time will cure this so don't shout when this happens he can't help it .

wow you already have a variety of answers, if the door is open all the time perhaps he thinks there is no difference between outside & in? small steps are how Ive trained my pups, start with newspaper & work up from there, if he always pees in roughly the same place put news paper there, if you see him peeing put him on the paper & tell him he is good, when he gets that right try putting it outside the door. Always reward & praise even the smallest step in right direction. most dogs are very keen to please so make it clear when you are pleased! Usually the best way to show you are not is to take no notice of them, NOT to beat them or put them in a "prison"! good luck!

dogs wont go in a cage unless they in there for over a day, or in a car in the back seat, in my old house i had a barn/garage and we cut a hole in the side, we cemented a platform where she could go any time, we gave her a tall fence around the platformm, wen u make the platform make it at an angle so the fluids can just drip down into the ground dont clean it wen the dogs in there, dont bleach the platform and dont leave it to gather fecese for over a week, he'll step in his doo doo and wen u might bring him in the house every once in a while wipe his paws, my dog was raised in this convinient envyronment and now she learned to bark at the door wen she needs to go, or take ur dog to a vet and get it trained or perhaps give it slow matabilism pills, dont overdose, u can kill it, good luck with the pup
