I must concur with the poster who linked to the Betty Crocker Picture cookbook. I have the original version and it is the cookbook I grab most frequently even though I have shelves full of cookbooks. It has all the basics explained and in each section it has key recipes with pictures and then variations of the recipes below. So it will have your basic angel food cake recipe (for example) and then maybe 5 other varieties of cakes based on that one recipe. It has lots of helpful tips and nice charts for things like what each cut of meat is good for and how you can cook it. It also has basic cooking terms and tools defined. It's a much better cookbook than most. I was also clueless when I was 22. I could barely boil water. What really started me cooking was getting some recipes from my mother that had been my favorites growing up. I might suggest you get your daughter a cookbook and add some recipes that were her favorites in with the book. It can be overwhelming to have just a big book that you might not even know what half the stuff is but if she's got recipes she remembers then she might be more inspired.

You can learn alot by watching the food network or cooking shows on PBS. Then you can download the recipe you've seen from a website. The combination of the two is a very good way to learn to cook.

As far as a beginner cook book....I like the way to cook by julia child. lots of illustrations. some recipes are harder than others. but all have very good explanations and instructions.

The best is the New York Culinary Institute Cookbook from 1951. If you can read and follow simole instructions, you can cook anything. If you are sloppy and lazy and can't do more than chew gum, then you better grow up to live at home.

Try one of Rachael Ray's or Alton Brown's (from the Food Network) Rachael's are all 30 minute meals and Alton Brown breaks everything down for you. Both are really simple and have great recipes!

I have one called "Betty Crocker New Cookbook" and it is excellent for someone who is looking for normal basic recipies, with ingredients that you can find at any grocery store. Just normal food though, not low fat , low carb, etc.
