I'm joining the police academy here in about a month or so and I am wondering what type of shape to be in. I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps about a year ago and have been working out a with mostly light to medium weights since then. I do some cardio work every couple of days but I don't run everyday or everyother day. Actually, I run about a mile-1.5 miles every 3-4 days. The other day I do cardio I ususally do about 5 minutes on a speed jump rope, do about 45 4 count mountain climbers and pull ups every 3-4 days. I do roughly 120-135 bench press, about 50lbs two hand curls, about 30lbs for triceps plus some back workout and slight leg work. Is what I'm doing enough or should I be working out harder? I wanna be number one when I graduate teh academy and was wondering if the PT is a big factor or if other things play more of an issue on the final determination. Any advice/information is MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

You will be fine.Keep your pt regiment going. You made it thru the Marines. That experience is going to help you more that physically. The academy is going to be physically and MENTALLY demanding. You have been thru the MC boot so you know how mind games go.They are going to try and test you mentally. You might have no know idea why something is asked or done, like in the MC,do as you are told and you will be fine.Listen to the instructors.Take good notes and study your balls off,and you will do great.Probably finish #1 like you want.Pt is part of the whole package, the academy is testing if you have what it takes to carry a gun and badge.
Remember this,"It is better to say nothing and have them think you are stupid, then open your mouth and prove it" .Keep your mouth closed and your ears open and you will do fine.

What state? In California, the physical qualifications are set forth by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). As far as what you should realistically be able to do? 1/4 mile (440) at a dead sprint, 1.5 mile run in approx. 11 to 13 minutes at the most, at least 40 pushups continuously (at the beginning of the academy). If you passed the Marine Corps PFQ's and agility testing there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to pass the police academy. As far as distance running, you should probably be running anywhere from three to five miles every other day at a 7 to 9 minute mile pace. At least in California...don't know what state you are in.

It will depend on what police academy you go to. some have alot more physcial than others. For example the GA academy for the state patrol is very physcial, would remind you alot of basic training, in others middle aged overwieght people have no trouble at all.

You will be just fine. All I had to do was seven pull-ups and run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes. Piece of cake as you will find. Look at some of the cops out there. Obviously being in shape isn't that important.

Hey man, I really dont think the demands for physical fitness at the academies are at all that high. Dont take it from me, but just look the physical shape of your average city cop. Around here where I live, cops are usually either fat, old or both. If your not too fat or old chances are that you will graduate from the police academy with flying !@#$%#! colors.

All you gotta do is be able to do a couple push-ups, sit-ups, and be able to run a mile under 5 minutes
