Given that "we" are actually several races and sexes, in terms of phenotype alone. There is a lot of variance. How is that variance accounted for? Is it just seen as error in the imaging process? Or does it imply that the original encompasses all variants?

I don't think "in his image" means physically. I believe it means our spirits. Just like when the bible says that David was a man after God's own heart, it doesn't mean he had a heart just like Gods. In fact, David did a lot of bad stuff. Just read Psalm. It means he was a man trying to be like God. That was his intent and desire. In the image of God means that our Spirit is liken unto God's. It is impossible to think that God who made the world and is omnipresent looks physically like us.

The Scriptures say that God caused man to assume an image identical to God. Since God is a spirit without a physical form He does not exhibit different races and sexes. When He created us we also were spirit but was given a sentence of death for eating the fruit of both the knowledge of good and evil. Contaminated with evil as we were we could not remain in the land of the living (or it also would become the land of the dead) so we were cast down to the physical world. In other words, we are God's son and offspring. We're gods ourselves, but we are dead gods. And because we're dead we know nothing. We don't know who we are or where we came from or why we're here.

What happened after we were cast down to the physical realm depended entirely upon physical laws.

There are only two sexes , male and female. We were made in Gods image But sin made us change and sin is the cause of difference in skin tones(I suppose that was the original cause Noah`s children that laughed at his nudity when he was drunk).Skin tone is now determined by genes but what caused the deviation in genes I don`t know.Nothing wrong with God or his imaging

God is a spirit. It's not our body that was created in God's image, but our soul, our character.
Unfortunately, this likeness became distorted through sin.
We are still capable of displaying godliness in our actions though. Love, patience, kindness, compassion are all attributes of God.
