"Sufism" is a pure, spiritual, non-violent aspect of Islam and all religions which concentrate on self-purification and closness to the divine through deep meditation and guidance under a Shaykh or Sufi Master. A true Sufi follows the purest Islam and works hard to reach deep love of God through purification of one's own sins.
check out www.bmf.org for some info on a sufi master. also, www.daar-ul-ehsaan.org. also, look up Shaykh Haqqani.

the only difference is modern not classical to say.The Sufi tradition springs from the earliest days of Islam where there were men, destitute mainly, who had no where to live so they stayed in the masjids of their particular areas.after the community prayer and after everyone else would leave, they would stay and perform thikr Allah[remembrance of Allah] .it developed in many forms and ways.each area and culture having important roles to play.they are called sufi's because of the rough, coarse clothing they wore.you need a sufi master if you plan on becoming a sufi master but not to follow the mystical paths of islam.

The best way I can explain Sufi is-- it is like Pentacostals are to Christianity.
It is thought of as an esoteric relationship. They are usually not considered true Muslims by other Muslims. However, they are responsible for the contiuation of Islam after it went underground because of the crusades.
