You want to have alot of good complex carbohydrates before a workout, about an hour or so before. Than after hitting the weights, or whatever it is you may be doing, chug a protein shake with water. Alot of people use milk, but that's a mistake, as it slows down the process of protein by alot. Water will help absorb it into your body within minutes of consumption. Make sure to include a dose of simple sugars to restore your glycogen levels as they are lost after a workout. You can find protein in pretty much any health food store. Someone here might tell you to have meat after a workout instead. Well that will take hours to absorb, and by that time the protein is not used for what it was intended for.
OH! one more thing...don't have any complex carbohydrates right after, instead wait about 30 minutes minimum and at max just over an hour. Than consume a good meal rich in complex carbs and high quality protein. You'll want some omega 3's too, have a handfull of olives or something.

Fruit and protein, protein both before and after and fruit right befor. Fruit has naturally sugars that give a quick boost of energy. Protein builds muscle.
The best time to eat is early in your day. The keep the carbs in the morning. It will give you long lasting energy for the day.

I have always had best luck working out right before my biggest meal of the day, most of the time dinner... that way your body will crave healthier foods to recover from the workout... works like a charm
