Quite like the idea of chopping off hands.
Alternatively a tattoo on the forehead to alert people

First of all you lot, stop having a go at the Police. Unfortunately our standard equipment doesn't include crystal balls - if we don't get the help of you or your neighbours, then we're on a non-starter really aren't we? Who left their bag on the seat of the car in full view? Who has their iPod hanging round their neck waiting to be stolen? You!!! So, take a bit of responsibility. If you don't give the thief the opportunity to steal in the first place, you wouldn't need the services of the Police. I'm not generalising - I know there are genuine victims of crime out there, and I do sympathise with them. And in answer to some other answers, don't bother taking the theives property, they don't have any, or they wouldn't be trying to take yours. Most of them steal to sell to make money to feed their drug habits, so they've probably already sold all their stuff anyway. Anyway, to answer the question, I believe hard labour or national service. If they try and escape or attack the guards, they should be shot.

When I was a kid my parents house got burgled while we were at school. They took my wallet, camera, and binoculars. They also stole the same things from my brother, took my mom's jewelry, and stole our van. The van was found down in Miami and a man and woman were arrested. If I could choose the punishment, I would kick the man in the balls, b1tch slap the woman, and then send them both off to prison for life.

I caught my robbers in the act. They got a slap on the hand and probation. I got my property back except the cash they stole, ($200.00 dollars in my daughter's piggy bank. I couldn't prove it was mine, even though I could describe the piggy bank and it was unique. So at any rate, They got $200.00 and I got the shaft. The punishment definately needs to be more severe, but there is no profit for the police in prosecuting real criminals. They make more money off drinking and driving.

The worst thing about having your home robbed is that it takes away the safe, secure feeling that you should have in your own home. The thought of a total stranger going through your most personal belongings is awful.
The best punishment would be for all their most precious belongings to be rumaged through & removed or sold at car boot sales for a pittance like ours were.

The police do not want to catch them They don't want the responsibility of deciding what to do with them. Bring back the stocks. Stick them in view of everyone outside a court house. Below the reason for the sentence.

Most people when it is happening to them may go to extremes. I have been burglarized several times. I would chop off their hands with no anesthesia. Yes it is extreme. And I would want to swing the ax.

The bad part about this is I followed foot prints from my back window to their back door. Police said it was nothing they could do.

If this was a minor I would want to be in a room along with about 10 switches and give him or her the *** whipping they should have gotten years ago from their parents.

my partner and I have been burgled twice, had one car stolen and another car written off by a drive away drunk driver.....
i believe that the punishment should fit the crime....i.e for burglary i believe the culprits should be made to use their hands in hard labour to help the community in which they comitted the offence...
for car theft....the culprits should be made to pay in money for any damage or cost of the vehicle...

My sister's apartment was broken into. Along with what they took, they ate food out of her fridge, and hit one of her cats. We figured this out when a normally loving, outgoing cat kept squinting and ducking when she tried to pet him.

Seeing how scared by sister was, the adjustments she had to go through, AND the fact that the cowards hurt her cat, I think they should've gotten at least five years in jail or longer. They could've been on the receiving end of some of the beatings (as well as, hopefully some other things, in jail!) They never did catch them.

I had my car broken into and all of my expensive stereo equipment stolen, The cops never made an attempt at trying to catch them... but had they, I would have liked the punishment to be me being allowed to break their fingers, one by one, with a meat tenderizing mallet.

:-D
