it depends on the hair color, if you have brown hair like your avatar i would go with a slightly lighter brown. that way its not super noticeable but if will still look different and good. not those super noticeable lines. i have a dark blone hair color so i would go with a slighty lighter blonde or a slighty darker blonde. it depends on if i wanted it to be lighter or darker. i probably wouldnt get highlights. but it all depends on the person's hair and what they want to get out of it.

I would probably do what I did the first time I got highlights: I have dark brown- basically black- hair and my friend who was going to beauty school gave me caramel-colored highlights, which is a lighter brown, and they looked great! The second time I got blonde and it was a do-it-yourself kit and it looked AWFUL!!!! Luckily I was able to tone them down by dying all of my hair dark-golden-brown, then they were a medium brown, similar to the first highlights I got. If I were to get highlights again, and I didn't have to worry about it looking "professional" for work, I'd want to get pink highlights! (I don't really know why!)

for light brown - golden blond
medium brown - try a golden blonde, or lighter brown, carmel
darker brown - lighter brown or carmel colors, reds
black - browns

if you do it yourself pick one that will match your skin tone. if you have warm skin pick one that says "warm". for more cool (pink) skin pick cool colors it should say something along the lines of "cool". there are also medium or natural colors.

if your stylist helps you pick your colors she can help you pick out a tone that's good for your skin.

if you go too light, it'll look fake. if you want to go really light, like blond. put in a lot of lighter brown highlights and some blonde highlights together. it keeps it more natural looking.

try not too make it too streaky and seperated. that doesn't look natural at all.

well i have brown hair and i have found that blonde highlights really look awesome on the brown, if you have blonde hair then geting lowlights of brown or a natural looking red looks really good also, if your hair is black then id say either red or brown highlights, if your a red head then i would so do blonde. . . . im actually about to go and get mine dyed all blonde and get chunks of black (not alot) i seen it in a hair styling mag. it looks so sweet . .

for dark hair, i would go red tones, like burgundy or copper. for lighter hair, i would go with blonde tones. for really dramatic highlites, try multiple tones at once.. IE. caramel and copper on dark hair or burgundy and purple (i know it sounds crazy, but the purple shades DON'T look like a grape on your head) . experiment a little with a few shades and choose the ones that best fit you style and skin tone. I hope this helped!!

if you had black hair, the best highlights would be this blondish colour though it turns out to be orangish on hair. thats really hot.
