The only thing that will really work is to replace the muffler. It is not that expensive to replace, and the attempts to repair it leave the chance of carbon monoxide (poison) gas getting into the passenger compartment.

Since the muffler isn't in front of me I suggest that he cut a piece of thin metal two or more times larger than the hole and wire it tightly over the hole, wrapping the muffler with the wire. It's a temporary fix, the length of time depending on the climate where you live. It will work for a while. My dad and I did this many times to leaky mufflers.

Good luck.

Depending on how creative he is, I've seen people spot weld tin from a soda can to fill a hole temporarily. It would probably last as long as the patcher you are speaking of... and if he is using again I'd having him put on a pair of safety glasses and wash his hands before he touches his eyes.
There are garages that will still patch up a muffler as well, if they are willing to do it....it won't cost that much.
