I would have to say pugs, I have worked around shar peis for years, and I just don't trust them. They are nippy and unpredictible. Plus with a child you have to worry about allergies, many people are allergic to sharpeis because of the oils in their skin and the bristly feel of their coats. I have never heard of a pug attacking someone.

No matter how a breed is described with regards to its "friendliness" towards children or babies, all interactions between the two species should be closely monitored.
If you must choose between the two breeds you describe (neither of which are highly suitable with children compared to some other breeds), the Pug will have a more stable temperament, in general, than the Shar Pei. However, I would recommend against both breeds for infants because toy dogs (like the Pug) are often threatened by the activity of toddlers and the Shar Pei (although a medium sized dog) is not known for its temperament, can be aggressive and dominant.
Consider waiting until the baby is older to include a dog in the household.

Pugs hands down. The SharPei is a strange breed of dog. They are usually one person dogs. They have a LOT of skin problems. It would end up costing you a fortune in the long run to have one.

Shar Peis, kind of like ChowChows, are a very unpredictable breed and can be the sweetest dog or the meanest. They are generally better with adults than children. I would definately go with the pug if you have young children especially babies. Pugs are docile, sweet, even-tempered, and almost always content. They are also small so they wont terrify the child, and they put up with a lot of rough handling. I have had much experience with pugs and I find them to be one of the best kinds of dogs out there!

My mom raised shar-pei for over twenty years, and I would probably say the pug. Shar-pei are great around their own families (they love their kids), but they have their coat could cause problems. A horsecoat shar-pei has a very rough coat that can cause reactions. A brush coat isn't so bad, but they can still be allergenic. Either way you go, make sure you do your homework and go to a decent breeder. If you need help you can email me (I show dogs and know a lot of people, and so does my mom - including wonderful shar-pei and pug people). Temperamentally there isn't a whole lot of difference as long as they're raised right, except that pugs can be a little more hyper. Hope this helps!!

PUGS! sharpeis were bred to be fighting dogs...they are a very odd breed, very hard to socialize and can be quite agressive.

FOR SURE pugs as sharPeis are desendants of the Chow Chow and have the tendancy to be more on the aggressive side.

We had a SharPei and he was great with our child, but for some reason didn't like other children. He was never mistreated or frightened by other children or even adults for that matter, that I know of.

well pugs are smaller and tend to be more submisive. But they are also a small breed so as your baby turns into a toddler it should be explained that " you have to gentle with doggie or doggie will get owies"
But I think your choice depends more on what you are looking for in a dog?
