I have a pug. A pug will be OK with baby as long as you have rules for your pug. Unfortunately a pug may think the baby is a toy (not hurt baby, but lick it like crazy) if you put baby within reach of pug. I think once you introduce pug to baby, all will be fine. As with any dog always watch a child when dog and child are together. Accidents can happen. Never keep a pug outside all the time. They are a indoor dog and very affectionate.

The breed doesn't matter - it's the dog's temperament that counts. Is this a stable, outgoing, friendly dog? Introducing your dog to a new baby the right way is important. With the mom holding the baby, the dog has to keep a distance away and only approach the baby when told it's OK. Don't let the dog just run up to the baby. Dogs don't really recognize a baby as a human because they look, move and most importantly to a dog, smell different. If the dog realizes this baby belongs to you, his pack leader, any normal dog will be fine with a baby.

Well, I believe the breed of dog cannot determine whether or not it will be gentle around a baby. I have a 3 year old 90lb American pit bull. My son is now 5 months old and already the two of them are inseparable. I feel the dog has been raised to be calm and not aggressive, there shouldn't be any problems. While I was pregnant, we prepared the dog for the new arrival, carrying the baby seat in and out of the house, letting the dog smell the baby items and even wrapping a bag of sugar in a baby blanket and placing it in the baby swing. After my son was born, my husband brought one of his hospital hats home and gave it to our dog to get used to the scent. The dog was still curious when we brought our son home, but gladly welcomed him with an open heart. Hope this helps... : )

You shouls never leave a dog alone with a child, even if you think that your dog would not harm your child. I dont know if it matters what sort of dog you have got as long as you introduce your dog to your child correctly. You have to remember that your dog is probably used to being the baby of the house and your new arrival will turn his world upside down. Give your dog lots of love and attention, i now you will have other things to think about, but try and fit time in with your dog. A quick 5min walk or a game of fetch a day can do wonders.

Pugs albeit one of the cutest breeds out there...is also one of the stupidest. I do mean stupid. Now while they might not be aggressive around a new infant..they certainly won't step around a baby playing on the floor. They will go right through, knock him down make 'em cry. Dogs like Labs that will step around a baby..might be a better choice.
