Its always amusing when some Muslim gets his panties in a bunch and says "go look it up for yourself!" because this forum is intended for people to answer people's questions. Now...EXPLAIN this in your own words...how can it mean peace AND submission? Those words are SIMILAR but they are not the same. It's like saying it can also mean sweetness and love and happiness etc.

Islam is best translated as "submission"
The Arabic word for peace is "salaam"
However, Arabic scholars are quick to point out that the "root" word for Islam is derived from the same "root" word for peace. Exactly how this is done requires some imagination and linguistic stretching, none of which I possess to swallow such a claim.

Islam means something like Submission, but it is said that it is a religion of peace. I have some doubts. To say that it meas peace is to stretch the word too long, far too long as you know.
PS to be translated it is difficult as I need several words in English. My own language can cover Islam with one word and it means the same - in one of the German languages.

Islam literally means submission and as mentioned by others that it is derived from the word Salaam which means peace. But there is more to the religion and a big part of that is submitting to God (Allah). So far, I haven't seen any Muslim posters who are not ready to help those who are truly looking for knowledge about Islam.
People are really weird, if you give them info, they will call them pushy. If you ask them to seek knowledge, they will say they don't want to help. You have to change your thinking. It's like no matter what you say, it's considered bad. Don't be like that.
Islam teaches that we have been created to worship Allah. There is only 1 God and that you should worship only Him. Submission is required for that. Islam also teaches to respect all living things, including man, animals and jinn. This is why we are forbidden to kill unlawfully including animals. So when we slaughter animals for the purpose of food, we have to take the name of Allah. Even in times of war, Islam doesn't permit the killing of women and children. If a person asks for forgiveness, we have to try and forgive him. All this is meant to promote peace.
There is a greater meaning to peace. Peace for your life and peace for your soul. When you pray and fast, it brings peace to your soul.
There is alot to Islam that the media doesn't say. That is the good things. You have to open your heart to look for these things. If you have more questions, you can ask me.

It refers to the sort of peace attained through submission to God by accepting the word of the Koran...like the the peace of Rome means Europe at peace under Roman domination.

Peace cannot exist independently of submission because everyone must submit to whatever regime and ideology brings peace for it to work. Have you read Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell? The people of Oceana must submit to the Party and Big Brother before they can have peace.

It is very simple.

Islam comes from the root word Sa La Mim --SLM...
Arabic is root driven word and so....

To do Aslama is to submit yourself. To surrender to God laws/commands.

Once that is done sincerely your in a state of Salam peace with you and your Creator...Even though the rest of the world can be in a state of terror like the Muslim world, a person can still be at peace with himself. That is what we strive to have in our lives with all the accumulation of wealth, children, property, enjoyment. The real way to attain true peace is to do Muslim = someone who practices Islam or someone who submits to his/her Creator.

in arabic the word islam is derived from the word salam which translates closely to peace.submission on the other hand means supressing your will to that of the creators.the jist of it is this... there can be no true peace unless it comes from the source of peace, and that is unattainable until you and i submit to His will, sacrificing your desires for that of Allah's.which is to liberate man from the subserviance of man to the subserviance of the creator of the heavens and the earth.

Good question.

Islam literally it means "submission (to Allah)" . "Peace" is derived from the same root word.

Read from wikipedia:

In Arabic, Islam derives from the triconsonantal root Sīn-Lām-Mīm, with a basic meaning of "to surrender". Islam is an abstract nominal derived from this root, and literally means "submission to 'The God' (Arabic:Allah)". The legislative meaning is to submit to God by singling Him out in all acts of worship, to yield obediently to Him and to free and disassociate oneself from Polytheism and its people. Other Arabic words derived from the same root include:

Salaam, meaning "peace" or "safety", also part of a common salutation, assalamu alaikum ("peace be upon you").
Muslim, an agentive noun meaning "one who submits wholeheartedly [to God]".
Salamah, meaning "safety", also used in the common farewell ma' as-salamah ("[go] with safety").
Aslam (with a short "a" vowel) also means "I submit", since the addition of a hamza to the beginning of the triliteral root, followed by the first two consonants, a short vowel, and the final consonant, is the first-person singular imperfect tense in Arabic. (For example, from Sĩn-Kãf-Nũn, the word "'askun" means "I live" [reside].)
