I've had trouble sleeping for a few years now. I have resorted to taking one advil pm 200 mg-per night, to fall a sleep. What's the difference if the Dr. prescribes me something to take everynight (which probably has more potent drugs in it), then me just taking advil to fall asleep.

The Advil PM is a pain med with Benadryl in it to help you sleep.
Your body needs the Benadryl to help you fall asleep. Although not dangerous, the Benadryl, you have in a way become "addicted" to it.
I wouldn't worry as much about the Benadryl as I would be the Advil. Too much of that can cause health problems. Ibuprofen, which is Advil and Motrin, breaks down in your system like Aspirin. Prolonged use of this can cause the lining in the stomach to become thin and could possibly cause a "bleeding Ulcer" and it also thins the blood, something you may not need to happen depending on your age.
Try just plan Benadryl. You can take up to 50mg of Benadryl at once. The OTC strength is 12.5mg or 25mg and I believe that one Advil contains 12.5mg Benadryl(diphenhydramine).
Hope this helps!!

Why would you think it is abuse? If you are not taking an excessive amount, over the recommended amount, then you are taking it properly. A lot of people have troubles falling to sleep due to many things such as stress and diet. That is why sleep aids are available and many people consume them properly everyday to help them sleep. If it helps you sleep well, good, continue to use it as directed. Remember- drug abuse is just that- "abusing" drugs which you are not. Sleep tight dear!

The difference is that the drug that the doctor prescribes you may or may not become addicting. Only the doctor knows the answer to that question. As you are taking the Advil PM you have to ask yourself "Am I becoming addicted to this?"

I'd talk w/a pharmacist... When I can't sleep, I take Melatonin 3 mg, It's a natural sleep aid... And the instructions say that if u must take it nightly, do so f/a month, then take a week off... Then, u can start back up again... Again, I'd consult at least a pharmacist, if not a doctor...

If u've developed a dependency then there is a problem. I sometimes take over the counter sleep aids, but I try not to over do it because U can become dependent. Bcareful, try to ween ur self off of the med's. Hopefully this will not turn into a big deal.

Bottom line...you're dependent upon the Advil which isn't good for your liver. Real or psychological...you're addicted.
