We want to desperately go to WDW w/ my parents in Oct. traveling from KC MO. What's the best way to persuade my husband to go and that it's a trip of a lifetime to spend the money- he wants to drive I want to fly. What would you do- housing there is paid for and taken care of. Explain in detail- remember this a family forum. Need travel advice ASAP!!!!!! He thinks it's all a waste of money- ( I think it's because he doesn't want to spend a week with the inlaws) Plan to go week of Halloween.

where did you find your airfare tickets and how did you get around economically- I have 5 kids to travel with. Internet sites only let you max order 5 to 6 tickets at a time I'm afraid if I do it twice I won't get everyone on the same flight. HELP!!

If you know how many days you will be going to Disney World and have a Disney store nearby, I would go and buy one ticket per week (if possible) Or if you belong to Triple A, ask if they have any discounts. By buying one person's tickets per week (or whatever your pay period is) you are not shelling out the money all at once)

You mentioned housing is paid for. If you are staying on Disney property you won't need a rental car. You could drive there (if that is what you choose) , park at your resort, then use Disney transportation services to get from resort to the different parks.

If you are not on property, you would want to either drive or rent a car. Look online for airline ticket prices & car rental prices. Total this up.
Now estimate how many miles you will have to drive if you take your own car. Figure how much the cost of gasoline will be. If you are thinking about driving, also be prepared that it will take a lot more time to drive vs. flying. (I always choose to fly mostly because of the time value- 4 hour flight vs 25 hour drive- much less tiring, too)

You don't state the ages of your children, but Disney is a FAMILY place. There is something there for EVERYONE!! While it IS expensive, what better thing to spend the money on than some special family time. As far as him possibly not wanting to spend time w/ in-laws, remember that while there, you don't have to stay "attached at the hip". We usually let the older folks sit in the shade and have a drink while we go up ahead to another ride, etc. Or set up a special meeting area for a certain time. (but be flexible, if you choose to meet at say, 5pm, someone could be further away than they thought, or in a line for a ride and not realize the time)

As far as expenses go, check the local dollar store for sunglasses, (we usually get 5 or 6 pair every time we go) if you lose a pair of glasses that cost a buck, you aren't going to stress over it. Purchase one of those battery operated fans that has a water sprayer attached. (they cost $2-5 at Walmart vs $15 at the park. Think about sharing meals. Many of the restaurants serve generous portions.

If he doesn't agree to go now (while the expense of housing is paid and taken care of) ask him to sit down with you and plan into your budget a savings timetable so you know when you WILL be able to afford it-remembering to factor in that the housing expense will now be yours (his) to carry!

I hope you can get him to agree. It is a great place. If you DO make it, remember to have fun! Play in the water with the kids, forget about your other problems for a few days. Take your time in the parks. You won't be able to see everything, so don't try. Invest in a good guidebook from your local bookstore so you can do a little research on which rides you simply don't want to miss, then plan to get to those first.

Have a great time!

I live close to you. im in lawrence kansas and for spring break i drove my four kids to florida. I chose to drive thinking it would save me several hundred dollars. We are going again next spring break and I will not drive again. it took two full days of driving to get there and two to get back. I wanted to drive because my parents did it and i wanted to stop and see things along the way i knew we would miss if we flew there. there was not really time to enjoy much and its not worth the money you save to drive all the way there. I ordered the disney vacation planning video- go to disney.com and order it for free. watching it and getting a book on disney from the store got everyone in my house excited about the trip. Your spouse will enjoy himself once he is there, you dont need to worry about that. I dont see family vacations as a waste of money. The trip was well worth the money- it was about 3600 for us and worth every penny. Housing is one of the larger expenses so if that is taken care of then you are very lucky.
