I've tried those.

Had chats with loads of people, but no true love. In fact. Nothing at all.
I went on for friendship only but most people on the internet dating sites are quite direct, and are there for their own motives.
I had them trying to be friends to start with, but then they soon change.
The best advice I can give you is:
Do not give out personal details. No matter how good they make you feel, or no matter how much you might fancy them.
Talk anonymously.
If you do end up giving them your personal email them make sure you've known them for at least a few months. That get's rid of the ones who are after a quick bit of fun.
If you ever decide to meet up with anyone, then don't meet them alone. Arrange a night out with a few friends present.
I know this sounds a little over the top but if they are really serious, then they will not have a problem with that.

Well, not me, but my uncle went on a blind date and five years later they got married! They are still together. It's sweet little love story.
As for online dating, my mother had a huge success with www.eharmony.com (they have an extensive, time consuming profiling test and a $50 entrance fee but it's worth it because it keeps the creeps out and matches you with people by personality and let you figure the looks by pictures). It was sorta like...well, can you say $20,000 diamond engagement ring and a quiet lakeside ceremony? Yep, sometimes people get lucky and that site definetly worked.

Hope that helped (maybe even inspired)! Good Luck

I have tried both Match.com and matchwise.com and I am not endorsing one over the other but I will say this. Whatever you do it all starts with YOU. Your profile and how honest you are about what YOU are looking for. I am in a VERY serious relationshp with a WONDERFUL man...and I did have to weed through a lot of what I call "pretenders" . It is worth it, because I would have never met him if in everyday life. I was able to research him, and we corresponded for a long while before we started talking. It is the best way to really get to know each other. Now, I am not saying that they are all good, YOU MUST TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. A red flag, then don't do it. No red flags...see where it goes and ALWAYS follow the safety guidelines...meet in public places and know if you aren't attracted...cut 'em loose immediately. You set your own standards of what you will and won't accept. And for me it worked, I am VERY busy...and I hate bars and clubs...and DID NOT want to meet a guy that went to bars and clubs. You DO GET what you ask for. I wish you luck and happy sorting!!!

Yes. It was a mutual friend who invited her to my friends birthday party because she thought we might get on. Our friend didn't tell us though. I remember kissing her (just a peck on the cheek). Before she left I said I would ring her, which I did. We met up, had a few drinks and by the end of the night I knew I had found the one. I went home dancing on air. I still love her to bits - that was 13 years ago - we've been married 6 years now.

Just as much chance of meeting a soulmate on the web as anywhere else,, you dont know who the average guy in the pub is who chats to you, so what's the difference ?
