i've been playing bass for about two years now. and i had a band started back in january, which is what i've always wanted to do. but when we finally got a drummer, he wanted to kick me out simply because i'm a chick. (needless to say, that band fell apart anyway.) i see a lot of girl vocalists, which is cool. but why doesn't anyone want a chick bassist?

I'm a male bass player myself. Personally I think it is awesome...and uber-hot...to see a female bass player. It kind of plays against stereotypes. Women are "supposed" to be light and delicate, and bass is "supposed" to be strong, ponderous and powerful. Screw expectations!! Practice with a metronome!! get good!! Kick ***!! and play with as many different people as you can.

Plenty of women play the bass as well as guitar, drums or whatever in awesome bands. Sounds like you got mixed up with a sexist idiot. Try playing in a band with other women and/or non-sexist men. Don't give up.
Just a few cool female bassists:
Kira from Black Flag
Tessa from the Slits
Jessica Reynoza from the Willowz
Kathi Wilcox from Bikini Kill
Deborah from ESG
Ellie from Erase Errata
Michelle Mae from the Make Up/Weird War etc

I live in San Diego and there are plenty of chicks playing in bands around here. If you can hold your own on the bass I wouldn't care what you looked like. Sounds like this drummer was a jerk.

Wow, I just happened upon your question, and I have to say you are SO right. "Chick" anything in bands are considered to be somehow inferior. There is nothing more rediculous!!! I have been on a bit of a campaign now for years to encourage females to play guitar and bass and ANYTHING they want in rock and roll. The plain fact is that rock musicians often discriminate against women.
Now, I'm a professional classical guitarist, ok? I also teach all styles of guitar to all comers. Now, no offense, but listen, rock is just NOT as hard as classical guitar- I say this because I want you to know that some of the FINEST classical guitarists in the world are women. Sharon Isbin, Ida Presti (deceased) and many more. Now you tell me : if they can get so good at classical guitar, why can't a woman excell at rock bass guitar.
I have a site for you for your inspiration- one of the Founding MOTHERS of Rock and Roll, Carol Kaye - is a major influence in bass guitar - you are going to LOVE her site

Enjoy and tell those men to go STICK IT UP THEIR CRAWS ok?
YOU are going to top them all!

I know lots of bands that would be happy to have a chic bassist. I would be happy to have a chic bass player too. Where do you live? Girls rock!

Guys get in bands because they think it will get them laid (and it does help, by the way). Maybe they think you are going to "cramp their style"... or perhaps they are just intimidated by your ability. Why don't you just kick the drummer out? Problem solved.
