A Cat is the simplest animal since you said no rodents, but so are birds. Both of these animals are pretty independent and you don't have to take them out for walks. The cat will let you pet it and you can even clicker train it. Birds are a little more exotic and you can also train them. It is really your choice. A dog is a huge responsibility and not easy when your attending school. What vet school are you attending?? Good Luck!!!!

I would say a cat. It's a loving pet,but also independent. They are happy when you are at home but are also pleased when they are alone. They don't need constant attention, they don't need walks, they don't need potty training or any training at all. They sleep most of the day and night. The make their lovely purring sound....I'm a cat person,am also studying veterinary medicine and I have a cat for 4 years now(as long as I'm studying) and I can't imagine my life without him! He's a great pet,and as much as I love all animals, and especially dogs,I wouldn't be able to wake up without seeing a cats curious little eyes looking at me :)

A cat is pretty easy to care for. They use the litterbox so no problems usually with housebreaking. You don't have to walk them like you do a dog, and they are just laid back animals.

A virtual pet.

Has a low to no investment cost, also with no future out of pocket expenses for food, vet bills, accessories, etc.

Definitely a Burmese python. You feed them about once a week, they're very clean and extremely quiet and you can take them out for interaction whenever without fear of them taking off faster than you can keep up with.

You should look at a hedgehog. They're totally low maintenence, but really sweet, not to mention adorable. Check them out, I guess they're a rodent, but it's not like they're a rat.

I don't think college students should have pets, for the time you have to spend with them is not adequate. If you insist, cat or fish. Each can entertain themselves.
