Its amazing the amount of ignorant people on here who think they Know the answer. If you dont know the answer please shut up and dont try to answer with your tiny brain or demoralise someone for their belief - it just shows how stupid & pathetic you really are!!
Muslim women/ women have a choice, no-one is forced to wear a veil (hijjab). In some countries it is just a part of the custom & tradition - ie. the person may not be even be religious but just trying to fit-in.
However if they are truly religious, then they are trying to follow the word of the Holy Quran sent down from Allah (SWT) the creator of everything & everyone.
It states they should put a veil over their hair and bossoms and other intimate parts which - should only be seen/shared with their husband.
Its stereotypical to say a veiled woman is a muslim -nuns wear veils also - are they also muslim?
Why do nuns were veils? are they copying muslims?
why do nuns cover themselves? - i think you will find the answer is simply the same as for muslims! - they are trying to follow the word of GOD & dress modestly.

The wearing of the veil by women is an illogical premise to claim that women are inferior to men. It is more appropriate to indict a society of female exploitation if it tolerates pornography rather than if it enforces the veil. Given that Allah is neither male nor female, given that He does not endear people to Himself based on their gender, given that the Creator cares about all of us male or female, given that the sexual and violent drive of men is stronger than that of women...given all this, it is illogical to cast a negative light on the following injunctions contained in the Qur'an (translation)
[33:59] O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not be annoyed...
[24:30-31] Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands...
On this misconception, there is a great deal more to write, most of it showing how current practices in many Muslim lands go against what the Qur'an and Sunnah have ordained, lands in which women are treated as property (unIslamic), are not educated (unIslamic), are forbidden their economic rights (unIslamic), and more. On this point in particular, we encourage everyone to consult the Qur'an and Sunnah before incriminating Islam. Always remember that Islam is a complete way of life from the Creator, and that Muslims are people who claim to follow that way of life. A Muslim may claim to follow Islam, but be wrong.

I love the answers from the christian person, full of understanding and tolerance.
The reason they wear it is because they are devout followers of their religion. Is anyone going to ask a catholic why they play with what looks like a necklace? Somehow I doubt it. Doesn't religion lead to love and peace amongst humanity!

It's because muslim men have a problem keeping their erection under control. They are so out of control that when they see a woman with womanly shapes they can't help themselves, and they feel they have the right to make that woman 'theirs'. And because they are so incapable they have to take it out on women. Very manly thing to do, isn't it? Whereas non-muslim men are able to control themselves and they don't have to pick on the 'weaker' ones.

It’s for the same reason Christian women need to cover their heads as well as Jews women. But because Christian and Jews women changed their way of living and they don’t practice religion as it suppose to be with the exception of some that’s why u see only Muslim women cover their heads.

Islamic women are required to wear the scarves or hijabs. The purpose is that since Islam preaches modest for women, they are required to cover whatever clearly demarcates them as women so tht they do not become objects of lust for men

It's required by law is some islamic countries, but in some, Egypt for example, they do it because they want to. Maybe it is for modesty or respect when praying, or maybe they don't feel like fixing their hair sometimes. Christian women in some countries do it also, esp when they pray. It's shows respect.

Many Christians also wear headscarves. It is the belief that their hair should be covered in public (as hair is seen as a highly sexual symbol).
