I think that a tree bauble with baby's first Christmas written on it and the year is a great idea you can get it out every year. My girls both have Christmas tree baubles to put on the tree every year he might not appreciate it this Christmas but he will in years to come. If you wanted to get him something to appreciate this year at 7 months he wouldn't be without a door bouncer it will add a little excitement to his day. The most enjoyable thing i think for baby's at Christmas is the lights on the tree they know its a special time of year from that and they get hours of enjoyment just staring, my two used to fall asleep watching the tree lights.

I haven't thought if it until now but, my youngest son will be 14 months old at Christmas. Sitting here, I have some up with a few ideas--
1. go to a hobby store and buy some plaster and make his handprint. turn it into an ornament and do this every year until he is grown. pass them on when he has kids of his own.
2. buy him an ornament with the year on it that holds a picture and every year do the same. put in your favorite picture from that year.
3. my mom has a thnig for angels--every year find a different angel ornament and make sure to put the date on it.
I am sure I will think of more-----

Our kids get special Christmas ornaments every year in their stocking. Halmark has a set for their first 5 Christmas' and then after that we start buying ones that show something that they are into that year (like soccer for my son or ballet for my girls) or for a special trip we went on during the year (they all got wooden dinosaur ornaments from the Smithsonian last year since we went there last summer).
By the time they are grown up, they'll probably have enough to decorate their own trees. :-)
My MIL starts giving them all Advent boxes at about age 2 with a small gift every day leading up to Christmas. Candy, socks, small toys, crayons, ornaments, new gloves, hat, Dollar store stuff, puzzles, coloring books, etc.
The person below me mentioned a handprint in clay. You can make salt dough ornaments for the tree and put his hand and footprints in them.

I get my daughter a clay kit every year - I have done it every Christmas since she was born - this year will be her fifth. You can buy them online, and you basically do an imprint of their hands or feet, put the date into it, and then the clay sets and you have a record which you can keep. You can also get plates, mugs etc. that you can do the same thing with but you use special paint. We do those for family birthdays as presents from her.

I think a good idea would be to set up long term regular savings plan or investment plan. That matures in about 15 years, as anything else like toys or such will not have much value as it would be forgotten in days.
In fifteen years I am sure you child would be more appreciative, and feel more thankful for the financial gift that you have saved over the years then anything else, apart from the love you give the child...

We really struggled with our sons first xmas, he was only 10 weeks old and we got him a lovely mobile for going into his cot and a play mat. Couldn't think of anything to get him to keep, girls are easier becuase in years to come the appreciate the small things in years to come but boys aren't interested!
How about getting him a nice money bank and investing some cash for him?

How about making an advent calendar - one that he'll bring out every year? A Christmas stocking with his name on?
A train set to which you could add carriages?
A rocking horse?
He's too young to appreciate it all though. He'd be happy with an empty box and rustling wrapping paper.
