Also, I was trying to download 'Shockwave' from the BBC site. I ask it to download and I get the small red 'X' again and it won't download. Any ideas? It should already be apparent that the only thing I know about computers is how to turn them on and off, so don't assume I've looked at the obvious solutions! Thanks!

The red X is what is known as an image placeholder. It indicates that an image should be there. You sometimes see them on websites too. The problem however is not at your end but at the senders end. They are not correctly sending the pictures to you so all you see is the placeholder. In a website it can indicate a broken link.

Sometimes by right clicking the place holder you can get to see the picture. If this is the case for you then your email viewer is preset not to download images automatically (I think Outlook might be set like this by default "for security reasons"). You may be able to work around this either by adjusting settings or in Outlooks case using one of the many hacks available on Google.

The occasional red x is an indication that the picture was not received properly by your computer. This does not indicate a problem with your computer. More likely that there is a problem with the mail server or at the senders end.

As for shockwave it is an absolute b*stard to download, they have made it as difficult as they can. I am experienced in getting software and in the end I turned to the bit torrent network to get their software. All shockwave related sites link to the main site which is crap. The site does not work. Go to isohunt.com and get it from here. You will need to install some torrent software first.

Try to save the images as attachments in your hd, in a different folder than the e-mail. If that does not work, and you still can not see it, then the pic is wrong. You can ask the sender to e-mail again, if you know the sender and trust him/her.

Press> control, right click your mouse and click> open...your browser is blocking the incoming pic. Or sometime you can hit control and refresh button...
