The mountaineer's route up Mt. Whitney is more direct, but does involve some scrambling and route finding. This means you will be doing some boulder hopping and using your hands to pull you up on some parts, but you don't need ropes. I prefer this route because it's less used and a more straight forward way to get up the mountain.

Keep an eye on the weather -- if you're going late in October, there's a chance you could get snowfall and bad conditions by then.

As far as difficulty goes, it depends on what kind of shape you're in. If you've stayed in shape and if you know you'll be okay at altitude, it is not a difficult climb.

Best of luck.

Rock scrambling is the area that comes between walking and full blown climbing. It basically involves negotiating your way over steep, rocky terrain. Too difficult to walk but not warranting the use of ropes and other climbing hardware.

Depending which route you choose on Mount Whitney it can be as difficult or as easy as you want to make it. You can choose a route that's nothing more than a strenuous walk or you can turn it into a major climbing expedition.

Be careful - my girlfriend (at the time) fell headfirst into a deep crack and broke her nose and took the skin off one arm.

Scrambling means you are on all fours climbing up. Usually, it is easy to get up, but watch for loose rocks. I would recommend bringing a friend AND have a blast.
