Will this go away itself?

Look at me! I look like a stunned mullet! I can't believe some of the misinformation on this question. Most Set's have a device built in which provides automatic degaussing. However the degaussing coils are connected to mains via a posistor, which essentially won't work until it is cool again; may take an hour to cool down sufficiently.
If it doesn't go away next day, after being off all night, then that part of your set is faulty, and you may need to find a friendly tech to hire his degausser to you for ten bucks or so, (with say a hundred deposit) . Then just plug in the wand, point it at your screen with the TV off, wave it all over the front and hey presto, problem solved. What has happened is that a steel grid in behind the screen called the shadow mask has been magnetised. Simple! Good Luck

Some parts of the TV have been magnetized, probably but not necessarily the picture tube. Modern tube type TVs have automatic demagnetization (degaussing) built in, and it operates every time you turn the power on. If you have turned the set on and off several times and the discoloration is still there, the built-in degausser is not strong enough. This can be fixed by a service technician with a good degaussing coil. It should not be expensive, and no parts need be replaced. Call several TV service shops and tell them that your TV needs degaussing. Use that term, it will make it appear that you know what's happened. If they don't understand what you mean, go to another shop. The tech should come out with a circular loop of wire which he plugs into the wall. He should move the loop slowly around the TV, gradually drawing back away. He may need to do this several time, but it should fix the problem.

First you need a hammer and than...no, just kidding! Degaussing will do the trick as mentioned already. There is no need to replace the TV. Some TVs have this feature built in by turning the TV on and off again or a Technician can fix it.

TV repairmen have a device looks like a fishing net frame, they call it a degausser. They wave it around the TV screen awhile and the magnetic field it generates evens out the screen again.

I don't belive that it is ruined i have had tubes go in my tv's before all you need to do is have the tube replaced but if your tv is fairly old i would recommend buying a new one because depending on the model this can sometimes be costly. kids eh..i know the feeling, but we'll love them regardless.
