It's a sin to talk back to your mother, or envy the neighbor's donkey, or worship a statue. Those are in the top ten list. But SLAVERY is ok? You Christians are unreal, and in denial. Next to the Holocaust, slavery is the darkest part of human history.

Because the bible is just a book of fables. It's full of contradictory stories and ideas. The world would be a better place if there were no bibles.
The bible is a book, therefore it's just a book condoning slavery, not real people condoning it.
And btw, for those of you who do not think there is slavery today, you are very much mistaken.
Mail order brides, children for sex, and lots more.
Not to mention abused wives...

I'm not going to take the time to look at all those verses, but I have a good feeling that those verses describe how a master should treat his slaves and correct conduct between slave and master. Slavery in Biblical times was not the same as the racially based slavery that was in America during the 19th century. Slavery in biblical times was sometimes used more as a method of indentured servitude. In other words, people weren't necessarily slaves for life. Slavery was a part of the ancient world as one might consider fast-food to be a part of America. I believe that if you examine those verses, you'll find a very humanitarian description of how one should treat their slaves.

I know one of the reasons slavery isn't discouraged in the New Testament is that doing so would've caused an unfavorable backlash from the very people the apostles were trying to convert to their new religious movement.

Who are these Christians who are lying? Exodus 21:20-21 for example does not condone slavery - you are reading into it because it tells a man how to treat a servant that it must condone slavery. The bible does not say slavery is moral.

Two books you should read, neither "christian" books.
"Christianity on Trial" by shifflett and someone else
"Slave Trade" by... hughes? Not sure.

If you will check out slavery in the original hebrew law, you will find that they were to free their slaves in the sabbath year (every seventh year) and that their slavery was much different from black slavery, etc.

Black slavery was started by blacks, then spread to muslims, then to the americas by traders, then to christians in america.

Slavery has been common practice all over the world since the world began, and still exists today.

The ONLY people ever successful to stop it were Evangelical Christians starting in England, and then the Americas.

The ONLY reason you think slavery is wrong (unlike the rest of the world till abolition) is because of Christians.

Remember that there are very strict Biblical rules for slavery

You can only beat slaves into near death so they suffer for a few days before dying

You can have sex with a slave no matter how they feel, and marry them, consent is not necessary to god.

One would think that the 10 commandments as an ultimate moral code would be a bit more moral, but nope .. it endorses slavery and ignores rape.

If you quote Bible texts, be sure to include the laws for how the slaves are to be treated. They are to be treated as one of the family, they can only be kept for seven years and then must be freed with enough resources for them to survive. You will also find laws about how animals are to be treated. Animals must be fed before the household. In order to keep the Sabbath holy, neither family, slaves, nor animals may work on the sabbath.

Those laws still apply to Jews, but Jesus freed Christians from "the law."

Shalom

It depends on your point of view . Would you expect people that you created to be equal with you ? Someone has to be Lord over all . I don't care what you or anyone says , the Word of God stands and will be here after your bones are dust .You are a slave to satan's devices , you speak evil to Christians yourself . Matthew 7:1 , Matthew 12:36-37 . If we are so bad then what would you call yourself ? Peace to you and God bless you .

During the Civil War, the Bible was used as proof that slavery should be allowed by the South, because it was in accordance with Christianity. The Bible was also used by the North as evidence that it shouldn’t be allowed. (The “there is no slave or Roman” verse was used.)

You can pull any sentence out of context in the Christian Bible to prove just about any point that you have. This is why it is important for text to be understood and kept in context of other text and the time in which it was written!

Didn't God tell Moses to deliver his people from bondage, slavery? Why would you believe the Bible condones slavery? The verses you quoted are not condoning slavery!! Read all of the scriptures, Not just the ones that suit your idea!!!

A slave did not belong to anyone forever if he didn't want to. Read the old testament about slavery. A slave was to be released in 7 years if he wanted to go. Most slaves wanted to stay with their masters because they were treated well. We are all slaves to something, someone, or some job in this world.
