i have a 5 month old female cat who seemed lonely so i got her a kitten to play with. the new arrival is 3 months old and also a female. the 5 moth old hisses and growls at her and wants to attack the much smaller kitten. the 3 month old is very playful and just lays there when the 5 month old hisses and growls. the 5 month old is now hissing at me but not my boyfriend who lives with me. im the one that brought in the new cat and i think that might be why. how long should it take for them to get along and will the 5 month old be herself again? please feel free to answer i need all the advice i can get. thanks sasha

You need to keep the new kitten isolated in a room for about a week or two (a bedroom works well). Let the cats meet eachother through the door crack and get used to each others smell. After this time period, you can let the kitten run free in the house. Cats need time to get used to other cats, and I have used this method on several stray cats I have taken in and everybody was friends despite the fact that if they were immediately introduced someone would have been seriously injured. He is hissing because he is upset, like I said the situation you created is too stressful and they need time to adjust where they feel safe.

This is a "not to worry" situation though I think others will be giving you good suggestions for integrating the cats.

The fact that the older cat is only two months older than the new one should make for a quick settling down. Although you know how females can be!

Kittens usually find it is so much more fun to play than fight. So you have that factor going for you.

Probably within a week you will wonder why you ever asked this question.

It is a tricky thing getting two cats to get along. It doesn't matter what sex or age they are the older will hiss and may even beat up on the little one. But eventually they will get along.
You are the person who brought in the competition so your 5 month old cat is voicing disapproval of you. Don't take it personally. This too shall pass.

don't worry. It might take 2 wks to 2 mos but it WILL work out. Cats can be really territorial when it comes to their humans, food & litter boxes.
DON'T rush it make them try to be around each other.
Give them 2 different food bowls & make sure the litter box is cleaned 1-2X a day. some cats don't like others n their litter boxes & some don't care at all.
I have 5 cats that were all strays & went thru the hissing & being mad @ me period.
it will work out
good luck

Thats the same thing that happened to me. We kept the smaller kitten in a room wtih food, water, etc. And we kept him in there for about a week and a half. We visited him in that room a lot. Then went out to see our other cat. (He knows theres another cat in the house because it is a different scent he smells on me). We brought him out once or twice to see what he would do around our older cat. Our older cat got mad, but he got used to him. Once your cat gets used to your kitten, let him out of the room for good. You might see some difference in your older cat because he might be jealous of you giving more affection to your kitten. Try to play with your cat as much as you would the kitten. It won't make your cat feel left out.

Hope I helped!
