I've been on Lexapro for almost two months. It's supposed to have taken effect by now, and it has a little bit--but only a little. My eight-week follow-up appointment is coming up so my doctor can see how effective the meds are. I'm only on 10mg of Lexapro--would it make sense to ask him to up the dosage instead of put me on new meds? I don't want to lose what little progress I've made by having to start all over again on new medication.

It took me a year trying different drugs to find the right combination. I see a psychiatrist for this - because my regulard doctor doesn't know enough about meds. I had him treat me years ago and was on the wrong medication and things didn't work so I went off them - not knowing all the other alternatives out there.

I don't know about Lexapro and don't know what you're being treated for - but I would suggest asking about combination therapy - seeing if another drug in conjunction with what you're taking might help. The biggest thing to help people with mental health is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) - studies show that medication alone only helps 2% - in combination with CBT 70% of people get better. I've seen this for myself a number of times. Get your doctor to get you into a program at a mood disorders clinic at a university - where they are doing research and have the latest cutting edge programs. You'd be amazed how much it will help. Talk to your doctor about what specifically you have feel the drug has done or not done for you since you have been on it. If you're sleeping better that's a good thing - and if your side effects are minimal that's a good thing too. If there is another issue with your mental health that is not improving - you need to talk about it. Upping the dosage may help - but trying another drug in combination may also help - be patient. It took me a year to find the right combo. Now I feel more normal than I have for years. Quite remarkable ... the programs at my university helped me enormously. Good luck. Best thing to do is inform yourself ... and try not to be your own doctor - but find an expert to work with.

Yes, it would definitely make sense to tell your doctor that Lexapro seems to be working for you, but that a higher dosage may be needed. I think they can go up to about 40 mg (with Lexapro) before they start thinking of trying something new.

Lexapro worked quickly for me and I noticed a big difference at 2 months. Six months later, I was at 20 mg.

I would stick with 10 mg and hopefully there is more improvement.
