You did not ask for ex cathedra, You asked 1) why people believe catholics believe the Pope is God and 2) you said you have never heard a Catholic say this. I have answered both questions.

Ex cathedra is not the only source of doctrine in the Catholic church.

I have done a lot of study, and talked to a lot of people, both Catholics and Protestants. It seems that around the time that Martin Luther lived, there were some bad popes, and they did have a lot of power. The protesters knew that nobody really worshipped the pope or thought that he was God, but the point was that some Catholics seemed to be paying more attention to the pope than to God, and were obeying the pope even when it was obvious that what the pope was telling them was wrong.

Martin Luther left the Catholic Church, and so did some other people, to form various groups of their own.

King Henry VIII was another one. He wanted to get a divorce because his wife hadn't given him a son to be an heir, but the Catholic Church doesn't believe in divorce. So Henry left the Church and made his own church with himself as the head of it in England, and then outlawed the Roman Catholic Church.

Now that there were all these separate groups, called Protestants, there was a lot of hostility between the Roman Catholic Church and these groups, and they all said bad things about each other, and each one said that the other ones were going to hell. Protestant groups sometimes call the Roman Catholic members 'Papists' .

the days of those popes is over. Pope John Paul II was a great pope who worked really very hard towards reconciliation of the people of God who say they follow Jesus, but some of the hostility and false accusations still persist.

It's a way for non-Catholics to demonize Catholics. Non-Catholics have a long history of discrediting Catholics since the reformation. Even Martin Luther called the Pope the Antichrist!

My sister is catholic, and all I've ever heard her say is that the pope is supposed to be God's word on earth.

You need to study the Catholic doctrine. The Pope is Gods right hand man. Right next to Christ. They also call their priest Father. Meaning like heavenly Father.

They said he was God's vicar on earth and that he was infallible.
To be infallible is to be God, for only He is infallible.

In fallible means he never makes a mistake. Oh Oh
The earth goes around the sun.
Somebody made a mistake. A guy that was supposed to be infallible.

Ignorance, and fear of another belief. My father told me that when I was young and asked about the Pope. This of course is the same man that told me all Jews are Christians. Not a good man, and it pains me to say that.

One of the tenets of the Catholic church is that the Pope is the direct Representative of "God" on Earth. Supposedly, when he speaks, he speaks the will of "God." Take it any way you want to.
