recieving blood transfusions? In such a multi-cultural world where a person in need o0f an urgent blood transfusion probably doesnt have details of its donor, could it cause religious dillemma to recieve blood from a person who regularilly eats none halla or non kosher food?

I promise this is a serious question and i am not looking for pithy or answers that are disrespectful to anyones religious belief.

I am a Muslim, so I will answer from an Islamic view point. I hope one of the Jewish folks will answer from their perspective.

The food restrictions are lifted in all cases where the issue is of a life or death nature, at least in the Muslim law. Thus if you are starving and the only thing available is what is not allowed according to the religious law, then it is allowed to eat what you can find, even if it is not halaal (i.e. haraam or ritually not allowed).

The same ruling applies to situations where blood transfusion is concerned. In such situations the restrictions are lifted.

Please also understand the basis of the religious laws and their dimensions with regard to the kosher or halaal foods.

First, food is an opportunity to obey God. Thus when the laws for food are instituted, it is an opportunity for persons to obey God in the matters of something critical for our very existence. Thus eating can itself become a source of blessing for people. One has to eat. Why not eat in obedience to the MOST HIGH? Unless the Lord institutes laws to eat or not eat certain things, you do not have that opportunity to obey him in your eating patterns.

In the case of live animals, if you must take life of an animal, one must recognize that the animal belongs to the Lord. One should kill the animal quickly, without scaring it or giving it minimum pain and suffering. One has to take the name of the LORD to signify that we are taking the life with the permission of the Lord of an animal that has been made for us to eat.

In addition the food that the Lord Almighty has allowed are good for you and has health benefits and those that are denied have detrimental health effects. This is an additional physical dimension in eating the halaal/kosher foods.

Why should a person be healthy? so that you can do good to the creatures of God. If Hitler is healthy, is that good or bad? If Saddam is healthy is that good or bad? But if a good person is healthy then others will benefit from it. So, health is important so that the good folks would do good works and serve God by serving his creatures and help the cause of good.

Once we keep these things in perspective, you can now see that if the life of a good person is threatened, saving that life is now more important that the health issue, so then it is allowed to give preference to the higher for the sake of lower.

I hope this makes sense to you. Ultimately good people would respect each other and help each other to become better.

Your question was totally a good question and thank you for asking. I hope my answer satisfied you. God Bless you.

Mormons also have strict ideals relating to food, but they strongly encourage giving blood. Also they are not against blood transfusions at all. However, blood banks offer "clubs". So if you need a blood transfusion, you can get blood for free if others in that club have given. This LDS blood club is huge.

I don't believe Jewish people have an issue with that, but I have no clue about Muslims. There are non-religious people who are even more fanatical about dietary choices than most religious people.

I can see it now: I'M A VEGETARIAN!! NO WAY AM I GOING TO POLLUTE MY BODY WITH BLOOD FROM A POTENTIAL MEAT EATER!

Yeah right. . .If your life's on the line, I have a feeling that most people are NOT going to be picky about receiving a blood transfusion which will save their lives.

I am Muslim. And, I'll say, from my best knowledge, that it is permissible to take blood from non-Muslim in urgent health situation.

A non-Muslim may eat foods which are forbidden for Muslims. The rulings on foods apply so long the foods are their perfect shape. I mean, pig-meat is Haram, but when a non-Muslim consumes it, it goes to his/her stomach & after digestion it does not remain any pig-meat. It becomes tiny particles which eventually get mixed with blood. So the ruling doesn't apply anymore on the blood.

A Muslim may not take blood if the blood contains harmful germs & diseases. Otherwise, it's ok in urgency.

In Islam saving a human being is like saving whole mankind. There are no restrictions in recieving blood transfusions as long as it's safe (not carrying deseases). In Islam if your life depends on eating pork, God permits it, and it would be we would be disobeying God and sinning if we chose to die starving instead. Allah (swt) is all Merciful.

read this verse:

2:173 He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.

If your life is in danger than, of course you are allowed to recieve a blood transfusion, it has nothing to do with halal or kosher foods!!

Verse 5 in Surah al Ma`idah says that we are in a position to consume the beef of the two Jews and Christians. it is halal, basically no longer zabihah. Too many people make a great situation out of it yet due just to their subculture, which they think of is Islam. however the Quran is incredibly clean and Islam does not make issues confusing.

blood isn't food.

Jews receive and donate blood to/from jews and non-jews.
(Organs are a somewhat different story, not related to food prohibition, of course, but different technical stuff. And we DO accept, for example, pig parts for use in the body. The prohibition is EATING pig, not using pig. That includes using a football or using arteries. )

No. The bible says we shouldn't EAT blood. It does not say we can't receive transfusions. Its the Jehovah Witness who misread that and refuse blood transfusions.

no...but really orthodox jews will refuse to recive anything from a pig as a donor...heart, lung w.e......it does not matter what the person eats whether they ate kosher or not...its just about animal parts being in their body...they would rather die then have that happen o them
